Backpacks of The Month | Top Picks From Osprey, Lowe Alpine, Gregory & More

Our favourite trekking packs over on specialist online retailer Webtogs this month, all handpicked by our gear experts

We don’t know if we’ve told you this already, but 2020 is the time to go on a long-distance walk in the UK. We’re all staying at home, we’re all in need of some escapism – it just makes complete sense. How’s your backpack situation though? Not got one? Need a new one? No problem – our friends over at Webtogs can help you out with that. They’ve got a giant set of options with a lot of quality to chose from. Here are some of our favourites…

Gregory Zulu 35

RRP: £125
Webtogs Price: £114.79

At just 1,330g and with a bunch of useful features, the Gregory Zulu should fit the bill perfectly for anyone looking for a backpack for a long weekend wander or perhaps a medium-length national trail like the Hadrian’s Wall Path. The suspended mesh back system will definitely be appreciated on any of those warmer days when airflow is needed. You’ve also got those handy stretch mesh pockets on the sides and one big front one to stash your down jacket, waterproofs and more.

Lowe Alpine Altus 32

RRP: £125
Webtogs Price:£96.79

This is a pack that the OM team have managed to test out extensively and we all rate it highly. It’s the back system that impresses us most. As we’ve come to expect from Lowe Alpine, it’s incredibly well designed and therefore very, very comfortable. All the right details are there as well.

Just like the Gregory Zulu above, it’s a great pack for those shorter treks. Size up to the Osprey Rook (featured below) or Lowe Alpine Manaslu  (also below) if you want something for longer adventures.

Osprey Kestrel 38

RRP: £130
Webtogs Price: £104.49

This is one of those packs that’s become a bit of a classic. The OM team are big fans of it – in fact, we included it in our Outdoor 100 series last year. Watch the video below to see OM editor Will out testing it out during a bouldery yomp through the Norwegian Fjords last year.

Exped Thunder 50

RRP: £200
Webtogs Price: £169.79

Planning something really big this summer, like a hike of the Pennine Way or Cambrian Way? You won’t go far wrong with this then. It has the volume you’d need for those big distances, loads of adjustment potential for any lighter loads as well, plus a whole host of other useful features – like stretch mesh pockets on the hipbelt and daisy chains across the front. You even get three different access points to the main compartment – very handy.

Snugpak Endurance

RRP: £100
Webtogs Price: £83.79

Despite the soldier-friendly colour and details (like the Velcro patches for unit badges), there’s a lot for everyday outdoor-types to like about this. To start with it’s super durable so don’t expect it to let you down when you’re halfway into a wilderness trek. It has a harness system that’ll handle any extra heavy weights and it’s highly customisable as well, with 150 MOLLE attachment points that you can attach extra pockets, straps or bits of extra gear to.

Osprey Rook 65

RRP: £130
Webtogs Price: £93.79

Webtogs are currently offering this for under £100 – that’s a real bargain there. The Rook will suit anyone looking for a not-too-technical option that’s smart enough, functional enough and, last but not least, heavy-duty enough for any backpacking adventures. Despite the low cost, there are a bunch of impressive features, including a suspended mesh back system with length adjustment and loads of pocket options as well.

Lowe Alpine Manaslu 65:80

RRP: £185
Webtogs Price: £135.29

With its massive 80-litre potential capacity, this is one of those packs that’ll suit those bigger treks into really wild and empty territory – something like a hike through Swedish Lapland or through Assynt on the west coast of Scotland. When you’re carrying big loads, you also want to have plenty of padding on the shoulders, back and around the hips and the Manaslu will certainly deliver on that front.
