Hiking Gear Of The Month | Top Picks From Merrell, Lowe Alpine, Rab & More

Our favourite items over on Webtogs this month, all handpicked by our gear experts. First published July 2020

It’s nearly here. Thanks to the hard graft of the good people of Britain, we’re nearly back to hiking normality; where we can travel to spend a few days in our favourite national park or take on that long distance trail we’ve been dreaming about. Best of all, we’ll be able to wild camp (even though that’s not technically been legal in the first place…). So, is your gear all good to go once the green light comes? No? Well, read on because right here, on this page, our team of gear testers have handpicked some of the season’s finest outdoor gear over at our partner retailer Webtogs

Rab Kinetic Alpine

RRP: £220
Webtogs Price: £169.79

This is certainly a waterproof jacket we rate here at Outdoors Magic. What’s really interesting about it is that it doesn’t actually feel like a waterproof jacket at all, in fact, you’d think it was a softshell, and a super lightweight one at that. As well as that full rain protection you can also expect excellent breathability, an athletic trim and all the kind of technical details you want from a jacket for use above the treeline.

Falke TK2 Trekking Socks

RRP: £19
Webtogs Price: £15.29

Falke have managed to get the material blend spot on here. Balancing synthetics, merino and a touch of elastane, this is a sock that provides comfort and cushioning and then some top notch temperature regulation and moisture wicking as well. The construction is impressive: the seams, for instance, are all flatlocked at the toe to prevent rubbing and there’s terry loop knitting in the bits where extra padding is needed, including under the heel and behind it. What this all ultimately means is much less risk of picking up a blister.

Lowe Alpine AirZone Trail 25 Backpack

RRP: £75
Webtogs Price: £51.67

Planning a summer full of day hikes? It’ll be a 25 litre pack that you want then, and this one by Lowe Alpine is one we’d heartily recommend. The crucial feature here is its Air Zone back panel. This is the thing that lifts the pack right off your back, allowing masses and masses of ventilation to keep your back nice and dry (and ultimately chafe-free). As you can expect from any bag with a Lowe Alpine logo, there are a bunch of other nifty details here as well, including trekking pole attachments, an ice axe loop. stretch mesh side pockets, a waterproof cover and floating lid to give that extra volume capability.

Outdoor Research Trail Mix Pullover

RRP: £70
Webtogs Price: £52.29

Do not underestimate the power of a good hiking fleece. Every hill goer should own one. Why? Because they offer reliable warmth and are so, so good for layering. This option from Outdoor Research is the perfect example – so perfect in fact that we decided to include it in our Outdoor 100 for 2020 (which at the time of writing is being, um, written). Even on those wet days where rain somehow manages to sneak right through your waterproof jacket, this will carry on keeping you warm. What’s more when the rain stops it’ll dry up super fast. You can get this in a bunch of different styles and colours over on Webtogs.

Merrell Chameleon 8

RRP: £150
Webtogs Price: £119.79

These are the kind of walking boots that are perfect for summer hillwalking in the UK. They’re surprisingly light and nimble but, rather surprisingly, still very protective and robust. One of the main things we like about them is the flex plate in the mid sole. It gives the sole unit a solid feel over rough terrain while still offering just enough flex for comfort over the course of those big days out. We loved the last version, the Merrell Chameleon 7, and this new pair, with its sleeker upper design, is a definite progression. This is another product that will be featuring in our Outdoor 100 product guide for 2020 by the way.
