Klättermusen Allgron 2.0 Waterproof Jacket | Review

Why We Chose It: Long-lasting construction, loads of eco-credentials and high spec
Price: £450
Weight: 625g

At ISPO 2020, we were blown away by the number of award winners Klättermusen had in their line-up. One of the products that really stood out to us at the Munich-held tradeshow was the Allgron 2.0 four-season shell jacket

What Is The Klättermusen Allgron Best Suited To?

In Swedish, Klättermusen means ‘climbing mouse’. With that in mind, there’s no prizes for guessing that the Allgron 2.0 is aimed at mountain-loving climbers in particular. The pockets, for example, have been deliberately positioned so as to not interfere with any potential climbing harness, there’s a two-way main zip to help with that as well, and the arms have the right articulation to allow high, unhindered reaches.

If all this talk of climbing is putting you off however, rest assured that the Allgron 2.0 is just at home on everyday adventures as it is when it’s a stone’s throw away from the summit of Kebnekaise – Sweden’s highest mountain.

The Eco Credentials

The Klättermusen Allgron 2.0 is made from a material called Ultramid Bio-mass Balance which is a Polyamide that’s derived from renewable resources. On top of that, quite literally, it has a water resistant coating that’s completely free from any eco-hazardous fluorocarbon chemicals.

On the subject of eco-creds, it’s also worth mentioning that the zip is designed so that it can be easily replaced if and when it breaks, so it won’t have to go to the landfill due to one small malfunction. There’s also the overall durability of the Allgron 2.0. Its fabric has a slight bit of stretch to it but it also feels hardy – you can sense it’ll stand up to most abrasion and ultimately last a long time. When it comes to sustainability, that should be the first box that brands are looking to tick.

Features

The Allgron 2.0 has the kind of cleverly implemented features we love to talk about.

Special shoutout here to the 3D-adjustable hood that closely follows the movement of your head and, thanks to its slight peak, provides a good level of protection even in ferocious downpours. There’s also that protective, storm-flap-covered zip which is offset to the side of the chin (for comfort) and has a button at the base so you can open up the front of the jacket for loads of ventilation while remaining covered from the rain. On that note, there’s also underarm ventilation as well, so you can really regulate your temperature when you’re working up a sweat in extreme conditions.

The sleeve cuffs are interesting. They feature adjustable toggles and elastic sleeve ends that make the jacket move with your body rather than against it. You can either wear the sleeves right over your wrists, like a normal jacket, or you can use the adjustment taps on the inside as little thumb loops so that the sleeves will stay put as you’re, say, reaching up for a hold. It’s the first time we’ve seen this system on a rain jacket and we’re really impressed.

Finally, and most importantly when it comes to safety, the Allgron 2.0 features Recco technology, another sign that Klättermusen have made this for those who intend on venturing high up above the treeline.

Conclusion

Its price point of £450 means the Allgron 2.0 won’t necessarily be for everyone. If you’re just a weekend warrior who likes casual countrywide strolls to the pub, you’re probably best off looking elsewhere to be honest (see the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L, priced at £140). If, however, you’re a genuinely diehard mountain person who loves clipping into harnesses and getting a bit extreme now and then, this waterproof jacket will more than justify the extra spend.
