Craghoppers’ award-winning Dynamic 12000 waterproof jacket is made from recycled plastic bottles – and wearing it "improves your well-being"

Craghoppers’ new Dynamic 12000 waterproof jacket will not only keep you dry in the rainy mountains, it’ll improve your well-being too (apparently). No, it doesn’t have in-built speakers that whisper positive affirmations into your ears. But it does feature infra-red radiation reflection technology – an innovation that caught the eye of the judges in this year’s ISPO awards.

This is how it supposedly works. The Dynamic 12000 jacket (due for release in September 2021) has a special mesh lining, made from six naturally found minerals, that reflects your body’s own infra-red rays back into the body. These rays permeate deep into the body, improve circulation of oxygen-rich blood and encourage cell regeneration. This in turn promotes faster healing of deep tissues, keeping you active for longer and improving your well-being.

That’s according to the marketing blurb, anyway. It all sounds a little, well, too good to be true, if not excessively fanciful – a step or two away from claiming “this jacket will make your life better”. But if we put the science aside for the time being, the credentials of the Dynamic 12000 look pretty impressive.

A 10,000mm hydrostatic head rating and 10,000g/m2/24hrs breathability grade ensure good technical performance, while the wide-peaked hood, deep collar and waterproof front zip further improve the weatherproofing. Built-in articulation, shaping in the sleeves and lengthening at the back provide enhanced comfort and freedom of movement, and you also get venting pockets, reflective trims, and ergonomically placed seams. Style-wise, the colour blocking gives a fresh modern look, designed for “young, active and eco conscious” outdoor enthusiasts.

“The jacket is planet-friendly too….”

The jacket is planet-friendly too. It’s made from a recycled AquaDry membrane stretch polyester fabric – 70 plastic bottles are recycled to make each jacket – with Craghoppers’ own EcoShield plant-based water-resistant finish. And all this comes in at a sensible price of just £120, available in several colourways and both men’s and women’s versions.

A panel of 27 judges from 10 countries at the prestigious ISPO 2021 event were certainly impressed by the Dynamic 12000, naming it as a winner in the ‘hiking jackets’ category. They said the jacket provides “waterproof comfort” and labelled the infra-red reflection technology as a “special feature”.
