Lowe Alpine Ascent Superlight Backpack | Review

The Lowe Alpine Ascent Superlight is ideal if you like tackling climbs quickly and comfortably

Whether you’re tackling a hill in the South Downs, Ben Nevis, Mont Blanc or something bigger, you want a backpack that won’t weigh you down unnecessarily. You want something that feels like it’s on your team, where the design reduces the effort required to haul it round the mountains. What you want, we think, is the Ascent Superlight 30 by Lowe Alpine. Perfect for the modern outdoors enthusiast, the Ascent Superlight is the ultimate pack for people wanting to tackle serious climbs quickly and comfortably.

Every effort has been made with this product to make it as lightweight as possible. Like a hot air balloon going up, this backpack has dumped all excess weight and shed everything except the essentials. And it works – the pack weighs just 580g when empty, less than half of some rival 30-litre backpacks.

“The pack weighs just 580g when empty, less than half of some rival 30-litre backpacks.”

One look at the exterior of the Ascent Superlight 30 illustrates clearly the kind of less-is-more thinking that’s gone into its design. It’s got a trimmed down look that highlights a conscious decision by Lowe Alpine to turn away from the faff and fuss evident in the designs of certain other bags. Don’t believe us? Check out that super clean and streamlined zip entry system, first and foremost.

If you’re concerned, however, that a stripped back approach to the bag’s design has seen the Ascent Superlight compromise on its technical capabilities – think again. The backpack features a double HeadLocker ice axe attachment, for when things really kick up a notch, an elasticated top retainer, a top tensioning rope holder and glove-friendly winter buckles. We’re particularly hyped on the bag’s removable frame with fold out bivvy mat. It might look simple, but this bag is well-prepared to handle whatever the mountain throws at you.

Another feature on this product that deserves great credit is the excellently-designed active shoulder harness. The harness allows for maximum body movement, while simultaneously optimising carrying comfort for those moving quickly across steep and technical terrain. Less time stopping to adjust the way your bag feels on the straps means more time pounding the trails in your walking boots – every member of the team who tried this on praised the way it felt to wear.

The product’s TriShield Superlight fabric gets that line between water repellency and weight just right, meaning that users of this Lowe Alpine backpack are treated to the dream combination of feathery lightness and old leather boot toughness. Durable, ultra-lightweight, aesthetically pleasing with a heap of clever design features; what more could an alpinist possibly want from their bag?
