Mid and Base Layers

Montane Dart Thermo Zip Neck | Review

A winter baselayer that comes with a permanent solution that means you can wear it more and wash it less

Why we chose it: Very comfortable, excellent warmth-to-weight, good eco-aspects

If you’re looking for a baselayer that’s going to do the job for you when the temperature really plummets, this is definitely one we’d recommend turning to. At 210g, it’s impressively light too.

Then there are the eco credentials. Not only is this made from 88% recycled nylon, but it comes with permanent Polygiene anti-odour treatment. Now, the idea behind Polygiene is that it prevents the build up of odour causing bacteria, and that, in principle, means you don’t have to wash any kit that has the tech embedded within it. We’ve used a lot of kit with Polygiene and we know it works, in fact you can check out OM editor Will singing its praises over on our Youtube Channel after he conducted a test where he ran in a pair of Polygiene socks for 10 consecutive days without washing them.

When you consider the fact that up to 3.3kg of carbon emissions can come from a single wash and dry cycle, anything that helps to reduce the need to wash our kit gets our vote, especially running kit, which can all too often require washing after every single use.

On top of all that, by preventing bacteria from spreading, Polygiene can even prevent fabric fibres from degrading, ultimately making garments last longer – another big positive aspect when it comes to sustainability then.

Tester’s Verdict

Will Renwick, editor of Outdoors Magic

“This is a quality baselayer – in fact, it might be one of the best I’ve tried. It really is incredibly comfortable against the skin and the warmth to weight ratio is hugely impressive.”

“I’ve loved wearing this as a standalone layer on autumn runs and I can see it coming on all my trips right through winter.

“You know that debate about whether you should layer up or go down to skins when camping out on cold nights? I now know that the answer lies in the happy middle ground that this baselayer provides. It’s served me very, very well over some cold autumn wild camps.

“It really hugs your contours and it does so in a very comfortable way.”

“Does the Polygiene work in this? Yes, definitely. If you’re fed up with smelly baselayers, give something with Polygiene a go. I think you’ll notice the difference.

“As for Montane Thermo Dart’s fit, as you’d expect from a baselayer, it really hugs your contours and it does so in a very comfortable way. There are some baselayers that are cut in a way that is really uncomfortable for me – Páramo I’m looking at you – but this one is spot on. I’m 5 foot 10, an average build/weight and the size M (my usual size) fits me perfectly.”
