Gear Guide | CimAlp’s New Nordic Walking Collection

Heard about the benefits of Nordic walking and want to reap the rewards yourself? This gear will have you out walking through all four seasons

Let’s set the record straight first. Nordic walking isn’t just walking with poles, there’s more to it than that. It’s an exercise that has profound benefits to the body, engaging as much as 90% of your muscles as opposed to just the 50% that normal walking uses. It can bring you greater overall strength, improved cardiovascular function and it’ll increase your calorie use substantially as well, so it’s a good activity for anyone looking to lose weight. Normal walking, after all, only engages the muscles below your legs whereas the Nordic technique brings your whole upper body into the equation as well, strengthening your shoulders, arms, core and legs in particular.

To reap the rewards from the activity all year-round, all you need is a pair of walking poles, walking shoes and appropriate clothing. Here are some specific products from our friends at CimAlp that we recommend…

Trousers

Recommended: CimAlp Bergen

These trousers, available in men’s and women’s versions, are specifically designed for Nordic walking. In fact, they were actually designed and tested by Nordic walking guides.

Featuring a wind and waterproof fabric on the thighs and then a stretchy 3D-FLEX Power fabric on the back and around the crotch, these provide that balance you want between protection and breathability. They feature two side pockets and a zipped back pocket and bring 50UPF protection to the table.

Baselayers

Recommended: CimAlp Charvin (men’s) & Aspres (women’s)

These men’s and women’s baselayers are made from an impressive fabric called CimaWool which has a high merino content (47%). Merino is a fantastic material that has benefits all year-round. In summer, it’ll breathe with you, allowing moist air to escape and speedily wicking away sweat. In winter, it’ll trap in warmth, ultimately keeping you going for longer. On top of all that it’s naturally odour resistant as well. Merino… it’s wonder wool.

Midlayers

Recommended: CimAlp Warmit (left) & Orba (right)

Warm, windproof and compressible, these two polar jackets, available in men’s and women’s versions, combine a fleecy inner lining for warmth and next-to-skin softness, and a knitted acrylic outer for wind protection. Features include YKK zips, a comfortable chin guard, flatlocked seams, and two zippered pockets and the fabrics come with full bluesign approval. Usefully, these jackets have been designed so that most waterproof shells can be worn over the top of them comfortably, so they’re great as part of a layering system.

Hardshell

Recommended: Storm Pro Waterproof Jacket

Nordic walking is a surprisingly strenuous activity, whatever the terrain, and that means the waterproof jacket you take with you has to be able to breathe with you. CimAlp’s Storm Pro is the shell you want for breathable protection, and at just 185g it’ll be no burden in your backpack when it’s not called upon. This is another item in CimAlp’s range that’s available in men’s and women’s fits. It also comes in a number of different colours.

Poles

Recommended: CimAlp Distance Poles

It wouldn’t be Nordic walking if you didn’t have a pair of poles. These ones from CimAlp are super light but also extremely strong – capable of withstanding 100kg of pressure. Their three-part design allows them to fold up small enough to fit into most daypacks and they can be deployed and adjusted in seconds. We love the fact that the foam grip extends right down the top of the pole so that you don’t have to reach too much when ascending steep slopes.
