Filson Skagit Rain Pants | Review

Unbelievably tough and waterproof; the Filson Skagit rain pants are built to last in the great outdoors

Why We Chose It: Fully waterproof lower-body protection. They’re durable, built for comfort, and perfect for people who like to stay out in the worst kind of weather.

We make no secret of the fact that, here on the Outdoors Magic team, we’re big fans of Filson. Not only do we dig their origin story, they were founded in 1897 and specialised in providing goods for people on the Klondike Gold Rush, we also really like what they’ve become today. Their stuff isn’t cheap, far from it in fact, but there’s always a sense that you’re getting what you pay for with Filson; that you’re buying quality.

From outdoorsy fashion gear to technical, performance-focused, kit, Filson is a brand that’s able to spin multiple plates at once. From fishing to bushcraft (and beyond), they’ve got very good at serving up items which fall under the workwear umbrella. Take the Skagit Rain Pants, for example. They’re as at home on the legs of fishermen as they are on the legs of woodchoppers and people who enjoy big walks in the rain / snow.

Who are the Filson Skagit Rain Pants for?

In life, there are people who like being outside and people who live for it. These are designed for the latter group of people; a group of people who would, if they could, spend every single waking minute of their days collecting firewood, fishing for their supper, and ambling about in the wet forest near the campsite shack where they live. If you’re picturing someone with a lumberjack beard, you’re pretty much on the money.

“If you’re picturing someone with a lumberjack beard, you’re pretty much on the money.”

The Skagit Rain Pants are incredibly waterproof. This, combined with their comfortable fit, makes them ideal for those tough characters who like to float about on boats, in all types of weather, and get productive down at the water’s edge – even when it’s raining cats, dogs, and hamsters. Outdoor enthusiasts with a love of fishing will like these a lot.

For people who tend to immediately run for cover at the first sign of showers, these maybe aren’t worth the investment. If, however, you’re all about getting outdoors as often as possible, no matter how miserable the weather is, then this product might just be for you. With an RRP worth of £300, they’re not a budget option. Consider if you’ve got the mindset and approach to make these work for you. If you’ve got it, and you need some good outside trousers, look no further than this offering from Filson.

Materials and Construction

The Filson Skagit Rain Pants have been built from proprietary waterproof / breathable Rain Cloth. This is the same three layer fabric which features on the Filson Skagit Rain Jacket. Is it good? Yes. Why? Well, because it’s a very tough, tightly-woven, nylon shell with a waterproof / breathable membrane laminated to its interior. It’s, in essence, a performance-focused riposte to any naysayers who think Filson’s just about fashion.

The membrane on the Skagit Rain Pants is full of millions (yes, millions) of microporous holes. These holes are too small for water to penetrate, but provide an escape route for the warm vapours that can build up when you’re getting active. By allowing warm air and moisture to leave freely, Filson ensures that the wearer stays dry and non-sweaty.

The interior of the Skagit Rain Pants is a brushed tricot backer. This not only adds warmth but also helps to disperse moisture. The guarantee of a fully-waterproof experience for the weather is solidified further by the smart implementation of waterproof flexi-tape.

“Filson ensures that the wearer stays dry and non-sweaty.”

We’ve already touched upon the Rain Cloth used on these waterproof overtrousers but it’s worth reiterating the extent to which it has been optimised for durability purposes. The nylon shell is extremely resistant to punctures and tears, meaning you can charge on through thorny wooded areas safe in the knowledge that the membrane on the pants is well shielded. Underlining that sense of durability and protection are the cuffs and lower seams which have been reinforced with tough Cordura nylon.

The Filson Skagit Rain Pants come with YKK AquaGuard-zippered hand and rear pockets, meaning you can keep your valuables dry and close to hand – even when the weather’s not playing ball. There’s also articulated knees here, something which greatly improves that freedom of movement feeling, and a zipper-fly and snap waistband.

All in all, these are some excellent overtrousers that really are built for the wilderness. Pricey yes, but the performance is spot on.
