Eagle Creek Pack-It Spectre Set Cube Set Packs | Review

Time to bring a little less chaos to your packing?

Travel broadens the mind. It’s good for the soul, and there’s a fair chance it’ll make you healthier (assuming your not spending seven days straight in a discotheque in Magaluf).

But there’s always a fly in the ointment, and that fly is packing. As a result, the internet is now awash with packing hacks, and tips for getting more in your luggage, all of which really revolve around being a bit more organised. Happily, the folks at Eagle Creek have developed the Pack-It Specter Tech Sub set to make organised packing an absolute doddle.

The concept – like most good ideas – is surprisingly simple: just three differently-sized, individual bags into which you put your kit to keep your main backpack organised. But when you look in a bit more detail, you realise why the Pack-It Specter Tech Cube Set by Eagle Creek will become an essential part of any trip you go on.

The idea of packing extra bags in you pack may initially feel counterintuitive, but these Eagle Creek Specter Tech Cubes are incredibly lightweight, with all three weighing just over 150g – roughly the weight of a couple of small apples. Suffice to say, you won’t notice the difference at all.

“…it’s the same stuff you often see used for lightweight tents and backpacks”

Their 30D Ripstop Nylon construction also means they’re incredibly durable for their weight – it’s the same stuff you often see used for lightweight tents and backpacks.

The material is both water and stain repellent, which is particularly handy if you’re using the packs to store your dirty undies at the end of a trip, and it’s bluesign approved meaning that it conforms to a number of standards when it comes to environmentally-friendly textile production.

The lid on each of these cube-shaped packs is a translucent white color, so you can see at a quick glance what’s in there, but it’s discrete enough to still hide your unmentionables should airport security go routing through your stuff. For added space, the small and medium sized cubes have a clever stretchy zip that can deal with overstuffed loads, so they pack down even smaller.

We’ve found the small cube is ideal for underwear and socks, or thin base layers, the medium for t-shirts and mid layers, while the large is big enough for shells or even a warm winter jacket. In reality, though, you’ll find you own way, and that’s the real beauty of the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Set Cube Set Packs; they’re so versatile that you can customise their load to whatever kind of trip you’re going on, and however you want to pack. In short, they let you do you.

Tester’s Verdict

“As a person to whom neither packing or being organised comes naturally, these Eagle Creek packs are a godsend. Whether it’s a two-day hike, a city break, or a long-haul trip, I’ve found the Pack-It cubes are really useful for organising my bag. They also prove useful for keeping stinking socks or wet clothes away from other clothes on the return leg.

“As an added bonus, even when I’m not travelling, they’re handy for separating things like thermals or gym clothes in my wardrobe, or hiding t-shirts my better half thinks belong in the bin just because they have a few holes in them.” – James Renhard, gear tester
