Black Diamond Trail Vista FLZ Poles | Review

From my experience over the years, Black Diamond can be counted as true experts when it comes to poles for outdoor use, offering a huge breadth of options to cater for different types of trips and needs. This pair, the Trail Vista FLZ, is designed for treks into rough country – when you want a trekking pole that strikes the right balance between weight and durability.

I’ve been using them through this spring, most notably on a round of Helvellyn and its two ridges, and also during a two-day trek of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and the set has performed well for me. I’ve also been impressed by the materials and design.

These recycled aluminium poles strike a very good balance, being reasonably light but also very durable. The Z-shaped folding system makes them very compact, but there’s also height adjustment – something that a lot of Z-type poles don’t offer. All of this is rounded off by a long, ergonomic grip and a comfortable strap.

Durability

I’ve tested a lot of poles, mainly carbon ones, that do have a slightly fragile feel to them. Carbon poles are often prized for their low weight and ability to dampen trail vibration. However, that weight saving can come at a cost, as carbon is generally less forgiving under sudden stress and more prone to snapping rather than bending – particularly in cold conditions. On rough, rocky ground or when scrambling, aluminium options like these from Black Diamond trade a slight weight penalty for noticeably greater resilience and longevity. This was most clearly demonstrated on our Yorkshire Three Peaks trek, on which Dave, who I was hiking with, managed to snap his Leki carbon pole, while I had no issues with these.

Another thing I noticed is how durable the paint is. I’ve used poles in the past where the paint chips and scratches off very easily, but my pair of Trail Vistas have held up well and still look smart even after a lot of use.

Despite being aluminium, they don’t feel harsh or overly jarring on hard surfaces either. There’s still a decent level of natural shock absorption through the shaft, so you’re not taking the full impact through your arms on harder terrain, which makes a difference over longer days.

Height Adjustment and Packability

You can buy the Trail Vista FLZ in two sizes, with a minimum-maximum length of 110 to 125cm or 120 to 135cm. These sizes should cater for most people. I’m 5 foot 10 and had the 120 to 135cm version, which worked nicely for me – and it also worked with my Durston tarp tent.

Adjusting the height is straightforward thanks to the large, glove-friendly FlickLock lever. It feels solid and dependable – I’ve used plenty of poles where these mechanisms feel flimsy or prone to failure, but that’s not the case here. I’ve not needed to tweak the tension at all during use, but if you do, the Phillips head can be adjusted easily with a standard screwdriver or even the tip of a multitool. The drawback is that the lever is quite chunky, but that’s the trade-off you get for that solid reliability.

Broken down, my 120 to 135cm poles are just 36.5cm, making them amongst the shortest poles on the market. This makes them very easy to stash in the side pocket of a hiking backpack. I even had no trouble carrying them on the side of a small Osprey Hikelite 22L daypack.

The faux cork at the top of the handles feels convincingly real, though it’s clearly a lot more durable. I’ve not had any issues with the grip, even when I’ve had sweaty hands. The grip extension, which can be used for quick adjustments, is a more standard foam. This also feels durable and comfortable, though it could be a touch longer to make the poles easier to grab quickly.

I tend to use the top of a pole’s handle for descents, placing my palm on it to hold it like a cane. Fortunately, the pole seems made for this, as it’s wide and curved enough to make this comfortable – something that can’t be said for all poles.

It comes with rubber tips that can be placed over the carbide tip – useful for urban use or for walks with long stretches of road or rock. The carbide tip itself feels built to last. If it does eventually wear down, Black Diamond offer replacements. The Trail Vista FLZ comes with small baskets that prevent the poles from going too deep into soft ground, and you also get snow baskets that can be added on.

Materials

Black Diamond have used recycled aluminium throughout this, which is commendable from a sustainability perspective. From what I’ve seen, this has been done without any impact on performance and there’s nothing to suggest they’re not made from virgin aluminium. The 7075 alloy is high-quality aircraft-grade material, and it’s clear this brings excellent strength and toughness.

Verdict

It’s not the lightest option out there, but it’s still light for the durability it provides. The packability is really impressive, and the height adjustment is genuinely useful. It’s definitely best suited to hiking and trekking, but it could also be used for snowshoeing and even running, though the Distance collection from Black Diamond is more running-specific.

Will fixing is eye on the carbide tips.

I haven’t experienced any issues with these during my time using them. They were quick to figure out, and they’re packable, convenient, reliable and very durable. There are cheaper poles out there, but they won’t be as hardy or long-lasting as these.

Overall, a solid pair of poles that will last well and that will be a worthwhile investment for anyone who wants something that they can rely on in tricky environments.

Pros: Durable, compact, some height adjustment, comfortable grips, easy to deploy and pack down, feels built to last.

Cons: Quite expensive, a little on the heavy side, grips could be a little longer, buttons are a little difficult to press when wearing thick gloves.

Length: 120-135cm
Folded length: 40cm
Weight: 267g for the 120-135cm version
