Bedrock Cairn Pro Adventure Sandal | Review

A lesson in minimalism from Californian footwear brand Bedrock Sandals

Why We Chose The Bedrock Cairn Pro: It’s a simple, comfortable, and highly packable sandal.

If the brand behind this simple, yet incredibly useful adventure sandal don’t immediately bring to mind fictional cartoon family ‘The Flintstones’ then you’re nothing like us quite frankly. It took a while, but once we’d got the show’s oh-so catchy theme tune out of our head we were left looking at an item of footwear that seems to epitomise the age-old “less is more” philosophy.

With the 100% vegan Cairn Pro, Bedrock Sandals have managed to merge effectiveness with minimalism. Just a solitary y-strap attached to a Vibram sole, you’d be forgiven for thinking that some of this sandal had gone missing in transit. But, when you think about it, it’s all here isn’t it? Everything you could need from a sandal that can be flattened out and stored in a pack between usage.

“Those Vibram Megagrip outsoles are super sticky and non-marking while the triangular lugs underfoot are wonderfully reassuring”

These things are ideally suited for wet and wild adventures. Those Vibram Megagrip outsoles are super sticky and non-marking while the triangular lugs underfoot are wonderfully reassuring, meaning you can step forth feeling confident in your footing. What’s more, when these do eventually wear out through excessive use, the Cairn Pro is also resoleable. Ideal, we think you’ll agree, for people who can’t quite bring themselves to say goodbye to an old outdoorsy friend.

We’ve touched upon it already but the minimal footbed here really is great at conforming itself to the needs of your feet. Flexible, without sacrificing sturdiness, you’ll love the way these feel when you’re striding across the ground. While we’re on the subject, shoutout to the Cairn Pro’s sole-hugger side wings that provide the wearer with a little bit extra locked-in stability.

It feels odd touching upon the aesthetics of something so minimalist but the Cairn Pro comes in a variety of strap colours. Colours like copper, black, turquoise, big water blue, and charcoal for example (there are other shades, if none of these appeal).

They might not be the cheapest sandals on the market but when you consider how quickly your bog-standard pairs have let you down in the past, there’s a case to be made that the Cairn Pro are a long-term investment worth making. Here on the Outdoor 100 team, we’ve also got a lot of time for the way Bedrock Sandals donate 1% of your purchase to environmental non-profits. Let’s make the world a better place, and all that.

“We spent the last eight years continuing to refine the Cairn design – making it more durable, adjustable, and capable. Along the way, we have lived in sailboats and vans, thru-hiked trails, built sandals in cabins, forts, garages, and now our solar-powered warehouse in California as we continue in our experiment of making the most dirtbag-proof footwear.”
