Alpkit Gamma III Headtorch | Review

A small, lightweight headtorch that packs a big punch from Alpkit

Small headtorches that pack a proper meaty punch are the ultimate David vs Goliath underdog story, and who doesn’t love a good underdog story? All that black of night to contend with and you’ve just got this little thing to stick on your head which surely isn’t going to point the way for you, but wait, yes it has. It’s actually done it.

Introducing the Gamma III from Alpkit.

With a rear mounted red LED (on the battery pack) to keep you visible on dark country roads, this bit of kit is ideal for runners and walkers who don’t stop just because the sun’s gone down.

On the business end, there’s a pivoting, water resistant 180-lumen lamp unit that can cycle through white, red, and green front LEDs.

“…you’d be hard pressed to find one on the market that offers better value for money.”

The red LED is great for taking photos at night without spoiling the shot and also for maintaining night vision, the green LED is ideal for map reading, while the white LED is best for preserving battery life.

The Gamma III gets another tick in the versatility box thanks to its detachable overhead strap which gives the option of a better, more secure hold when it’s needed – on a night run for instance.

There are lighter headtorches out there – it’s charged by 3 x AAA batteries after all – but you’d be hard pressed to find one on the market that offers better value for money. Speaking of which, we think there are few in the business better than Alpkit when it comes to delivering excellent products without the bank emptying price point.

Because of this, and everything else we’ve just discussed, the Gamma III comes highly recommended.

Tester’s Verdict

“Imagine having a sun on your head, a sun that’s as bright as a regular sun but about the size of your big toenail. That’s how it felt when, arriving in Dartmoor in the dead of night, I switched on the Alpkit Gamma III.

For such a small headtorch, it really is remarkable how much of the environment this thing illuminates. It’s good that it comes with a three-year guarantee as well, but I’m pretty sure I won’t be needing to fall back on that.” – Jack Clayton, editor of Mpora.
