There’s no end of blog posts, Instagram accounts and Reddit threads devoted to camp cooking and inspiration but how many of the recipes and tips we’re shown are really realistic for backpackers – more specifically, backpackers who are self-conscious about how much their backpack weighs?
In this week’s episode, OM editor Will gives us a dose of realism, going through the recipes (if you can call them that) that he’s turned to on some of his mega thru hikes, including a 1,034-mile walk around Wales, the Cambrian Way and the Alta Via 2 through the Dolomites.
What you’ll see here are meals that take less than five minutes to prepare, that can be made from ingredients you can pick up in the most basic of shops, that’ll cost and weight next to nothing and, crucially, will still offer a decent calorie count…
