Why We Chose It: Comfortable over distances, good protection, lightweight feel.
The Meindl Tonale GTX are, quite simply, a good pair of boots. If we could finish this review there, we would, but then, you’re probably after a few more details.
Designed for three-season use, these would be right at home in the hills and mountains of the UK, with a strong but still flexible sole, supportive mid height ankle, reasonably lightweight design and reliable waterproofing thanks to a Gore-Tex lining.
As well as that membrane, the upper features a nice mix of suede and mesh, with loads of padding as well, particularly in the tongue. There’s also a strong rubber rand which covers the toe and runs right around the base to provide durable protection to your feet and, of course, to the upper’s materials

Underfoot there’s a removable foam footbed and double density EVA midsole. These combine to provide plenty of cushioning and shock absorption, thus optimising these for long-distance trekking. There’s also a good bit of grip as well – as you’d expect from a sole made by Vibram – with reasonably deep lugs that’ll bite right into any soft ground.
As for the lacing, we liked the fact that it goes all the way down to the toe, almost like you’d see on an approach shoe, allowing you to get a really precise, close fit across the length of your foot. The heel lock, which integrates with the lacing, adds to this aspect of the shoe as well. Last but not least, there’s a little hook at the top of the tongue to allow you to gather the two laces and concentrate them in the right place. Small detail, but a useful one.
