1000 Mile Trail Sock | Review

Trail runners will love what the slightly padded 1000 Mile Trail Sock brings to the table

Why We Chose The 1000 Mile Trail Sock: Comfortable, breathable, and fresher than your average sock, two pairs for the price of one.

Is there anything better in this life than a nice pair of comfortable socks? Sure, the first light of day while camping is nice. And yes, there’s a lot to be said for that first pint after a multi-day hike. But, in all honesty, we can’t think of many outdoor pleasures as simple, and yet enjoyable, as putting on a pair of socks that just feel right. Step forward: the Trail Sock from 1000 Mile.

This is a sock you can rely on, a sock that’s got your back (or should that be feet?) when the going gets tough. This has been, pardon the surgeon speak, anatomically designed to deliver comfort and support when you’re running off-road – a single skin design that strikes the perfect balance between comfort and breathability.

“In fact, I’d say these have been pretty perfect.”

There’s a slight bit of padding on the base – not too much to make things too hot though – and this extends upwards at the back to protect and support the achilles tendon. It wraps around the toes as well to prevent rubbing and, in turn, those dreaded blisters. Shoutout also to the flat toe seam here, a feature that significantly reduces the risk of any irritation in that flashpoint area.

A number of different materials have been utilised, and they’re all zoned strategically throughout the sock. The padding on the base, for instance, mixes Merino and acrylic in a blend that will offer natural anti-microbial properties (to stop nasty smells building up) and a smooth comfortable feel in those places that are likely to rub the most. Then on the top, there’s a blend of nylon and elastane that will first of all ensure that the sock stays nice and close to the skin, but then also help to ensure any moisture is wicked upwards to the ankle.

The thinner weave and air channels on the top of the ankle add ventilation to proceedings, and underline the intelligent thought processes overall that lie behind this sock’s design. Breathable, without ever sacrificing comfort or warmth, these things somehow do it all and then some.

Once the 1000 Mile Trail Socks are on your feet, you’ll be reluctant to take them off again.

Bear in mind that, as there’s that Merino in the 1000 Mile Track Sock, you’ll need to clean them on a slightly cooler wash. 1000 Mile suggest a 30° cycle and no tumble drying. You’ll find more details about that on their website.

Tester’s Verdict

Will Renwick, Outdoors Magic Editor

“I’ve been using the men’s version of these for a long time now, wearing them for everything from run commuting to ultra marathons. Actually, come to think of it, they really should be stinking by now considering how much use I’ve got from them.

“Merino-based socks wouldn’t normally be my first choice for trail running – it’s a slightly delicate fabric after all – but these have really done the job. They’re still in very good condition with no lingering smell and no wear and tear.

“I’ve never felt any niggling from any seams, and they’ve never bunched up or creased in my shoes either. In fact, I’d say these have been pretty perfect.”

Trade Secrets

1000 Mile Marketing Staff

“Trail and fell runners demand a lot from their feet: steep slopes, wet (it’s the UK!) terrain and muddy paths are the norm, so those feet need protection. While uber-technical and double layer 1000 Mile socks undoubtedly have their place, what we have been asked for year-after-year is an amazing value-for-money off-road sock, that can take the punishment and yet be cost-effective too. After much development work from trail runners with decades of experience from around the world, the 1000 Mile Twin Pack Trail is here. TWO pairs of wonderfully comfortable socks with wicking protection, all for the price of one technical sock.
