Haglöfs Skuta Mid Proof Eco | Review

A bluesign-approved mid cut hiking boot from long-standing Swedish brand Haglöfs

Why We Chose The Haglöfs Skuta Mid Proof Eco: Eco credentials, comfort, shock absorption.

There’s a lot to like with this new boot from Swedish brand Haglöfs.

First of all, let’s get the shallow aesthetics part out of the way. It’s a nice-looking boot we think, successfully blending that traditional leather look with a modern style to create something that looks high-tech without being over the top or ‘out there’.

“In an impressively bold move, Haglöfs have said they’ll actually be phasing out fluorocarbons from their complete range by 2020 – heck, it’s highly likely they’ll be gone by the time you read this.”

More importantly though, it’s eco-friendly, as the name suggests. Absolutely zilch nasty chemicals have been used in its creation. What we’re specifically referring to are those PFCs or perfluorinated compounds, which have been proven to be environmentally hazardous. Plenty of brands have stopped using these in the water repellent treatment that’s applied to the outer fabrics of their footwear – the DWR that makes water bead off – but not many have taken the extra step of removing all the nasty stuff contained in the waterproof membrane as well. Haglöfs have removed the lot here so kudos to them for doing that.

The eco-friendly waterproofing that’s featured in this boot is also used in their brand new and very fancy Grym Evo which, as it goes, was also selected in our Outdoor100 product guide this time round.

Anyway, onto the performance.

What you might not know about Haglöfs is that they’re owned by Asics and the good thing about this is that it means they’ve been able to borrow some of that running brand’s tech. In fact, the outsole is an AHAR Plus, a grippy rubber tread that’s used across many of Asics’ shoes.

Tester’s Verdict

Will Renwick, Outdoors Magic Editor

“I ended up wearing these on some of the toughest via ferrata I’ve ever taken on. That’s definitely not what they’re made for, but it was an interesting way of pushing them to their limits. And they were great.

“They have a wide toe so that didn’t make getting a good foothold easy, but apart from that, they were supportive around the ankle, fairly breathable, and quite solid but without being too stiff. On the hike down from the summit of the mountain we’d climbed they had impressive shock absorption as well.

“That shock absorption is thanks to the generously cushioned and fairly flexible midsole which features both EVA foam and a strange kind of gel that feels like, um, like polyfilla, but in a good way. I saw it at work in Haglöfs’ Lake District showroom where they dropped an egg from about two metres up and there wasn’t even a crack. Impressive stuff.

“There are grippier mid cut boots out there, but still these will give enough traction for any moderate-level hiking. They certainly fared well on some scree descents in the Alps.

“Final point: the price. £120 really ain’t bad considering the thought that has gone into the Skuta.”
