Outdoor clothing doesn’t always have to look like outdoor clothing. The Páramo Velez Shorts and Cambia T-shirt are a good example of this, combining a fairly casual appearance with the sort of technical features I’d normally expect from hiking kit.
The Velez Shorts look almost like a pair of denim shorts, while the Cambia is a relatively understated T-shirt. Underneath those everyday looks, however, you get sweat-wicking fabrics, UV protection, a quick drying time and a construction designed for active use.
I’ve worn both pieces throughout summer, most notably during a week-long trip to Pembrokeshire, including hikes in the Preseli Hills and along the coast, as well as using them casually day to day. We also sent our tester Cal off with them for a multi-activity week in Asturias, northern Spain, where he used them for hiking and mountain biking in hot, humid conditions.
Páramo Velez Shorts and Cambia T-shirt: The Top Line
The biggest attraction here is versatility. This is an outfit that works on the trail during the day but doesn’t look out of place when you head into town afterwards. That makes it particularly useful for travel, long-distance trekking and multi-activity trips where I don’t want to pack separate clothing for every occasion.
The Velez Shorts have a touch of stretch for freedom of movement, while the Cambia T-shirt uses a reversible fabric that can be worn with either its smooth or bobbled side against the skin.

Páramo Cambia T-shirt
Comfort and Fit
The Velez Shorts are comfortable once you get the sizing right. I normally wear a 32-inch waist in brands such as Arc’teryx and Fjällräven, but I found the size 32 Velez Trek 4 a little tight around the waist. I’d recommend going up a size if you’re between sizes or prefer a little more room.
There is some stretch in the waistband, so I found they stayed comfortably in place without needing to wear a belt. The shorts themselves also have enough stretch to give good freedom of movement, which proved useful when hiking and mountain biking.
The Cambia T-shirt was much more straightforward. I tested a medium, which is my usual size, and found the fit close without being restrictive. The fabric is stretchy and comfortable against the skin, while the flatlocked seams don’t cause any irritation when wearing it for long periods.
Páramo Velez Shorts
The Velez Shorts look like a pair of casual denim shorts, but they’re considerably more technical. The fabric has some stretch, is durable and abrasion resistant, and provides useful wind blocking and UV protection.
They aren’t completely water resistant, but the fabric initially sheds some moisture before eventually becoming saturated. More importantly for summer use, they dry very quickly. After getting wet or sweaty, I found they dried significantly faster than a normal pair of denim shorts.
The Trek 4 version I tested has two handwarmer pockets and a zipped pocket that’s large enough to take a passport. There are also belt loops, a zipped fly and a button fastening. If you need more storage, the Velez Trek 7 version adds further pocket options.
Páramo Cambia T-shirt
The Cambia is a more unusual piece of clothing because it’s reversible. One side has a slightly bobbled texture designed to trap more warmth against the skin, while the smooth side gives a cooler feel.
I’ve found that useful as temperatures change throughout the day. The fabric is also quick drying and does a good job of moving sweat away from the skin.
There is plenty of stretch, but the material feels durable rather than flimsy. It’s also reasonably thick, which is both a benefit and a drawback. It gives the T-shirt a substantial feel and makes it more useful when temperatures start to drop, but in very hot weather I found it could feel a little warm.
The Cambia provides UPF 25+ protection, making it useful for long days in strong sunshine. Combined with its sweat-wicking performance, this makes it a particularly good option for active summer days.
As with most synthetic T-shirts, it eventually starts to pick up odour after repeated use. I’d recommend washing it with a technical base-layer detergent such as Nikwax BaseWash.
Hiking, Mountain Biking and Travel
I’ve been particularly impressed by how well these two pieces work together.
During his Asturias trip, Cal used them for both hiking and mountain biking in hot and humid conditions. He reported back that they handled sweat well and dried quickly, while the shorts gave him plenty of freedom of movement.
I’ve also found them useful for longer days where I’m moving between different environments. On my Pembrokeshire trip, for example, I could wear them for a day of walking and then carry on into the evening without feeling like I was still dressed specifically for hiking.
That’s really where I think this combination makes the most sense. The casual styling means I can wear it in towns, restaurants or while travelling, while the technical features are there when I head onto the trail.
Páramo Velez Shorts and Cambia T-shirt vs the Competition
There are plenty of technical hiking shorts and T-shirts that are lighter and more overtly designed for hot-weather use. If I’m heading somewhere extremely hot and only care about minimising weight and maximising airflow, I’d probably choose something more minimalist.
The advantage of the Páramo combination is its versatility. The Velez Shorts look much more like everyday clothing than conventional hiking shorts, while the Cambia doesn’t have the overtly technical appearance of many performance T-shirts.
That makes them particularly useful for travel, where I’m often trying to reduce the amount of clothing I need to pack.
Verdict
The Páramo Velez Shorts and Cambia T-shirt offer a useful combination of casual styling and genuine outdoor performance.
I’ve found both pieces comfortable, durable and quick drying, while the shorts’ UV protection and the Cambia’s UPF 25+ rating make them particularly useful for summer adventures. The reversible construction of the T-shirt is also a clever touch, giving it some versatility as temperatures change.
There are a couple of compromises. I’d recommend sizing up with the shorts, while the relatively thick Cambia fabric can feel warm in very hot conditions. The lack of an inner mesh in the shorts is also something I’d bear in mind if you’re regularly walking through tick-infested vegetation.
Overall, though, I think this is a very good combination for travel and multi-activity use. It works for hiking, mountain biking and everyday wear, and I particularly like the fact that I can go from the trail to town without needing to change.
