Why we chose it: tough build quality, recycled and organic materials, adjustable hood, zippered front pockets.
Sasta are a Finnish outdoor clothing brand who originally began making apparel for hunters working in the wilderness areas of Northern Karelia. Their Hossa Technical Outdoor Jacket isn’t quite a soft-shell or a waterproof jacket, but its comfortable fabrics and rugged design could make it a functional and reliable everyday layer for many outdoor activities.
Who Is The Sasta Hossa Jacket For?
Hunters, walkers, bird watchers, and pretty much anybody else spending long days outside will appreciate the durability of the Hossa Jacket’s materials, and its functional design. The water repellent cotton and breathable stretch panels aim to strike a good balance between weather resistance and breathability.
It strikes us as one of those layers that you can happily wear all day and year-round amongst changing conditions. The earthy colours and quiet fabrics will also suit those who prefer to blend in, rather than stand out when they’re in nature.
Materials and Construction
The main body of the Sasta Hossa jacket is made from an organic cotton and recycled polyester blend. Expect it to stand up well to abrasion from rocks and branches. The material also won’t be as noisy as many other modern jackets, which makes it suited to moving quietly through trees and undergrowth and spotting wildlife.
The entire jacket has been treated with Nikwax waterproofing technology, so it will hold out well in light to moderate rain, but dump more heat than a hard shell. The sides of the jacket feature long and stretchy panels. These are designed to make it more comfortable to move in, and to increase breathability when you begin to overheat.
Features
The Hossa features a two way front zipper, which allows further venting options by allowing you to unzip the jacket slightly from the bottom as needed. On the front are two zipped chest pockets, which are big enough to accommodate gloves or a phone.
The hood has a wired brim and two points of adjustment, which should keep you well protected during windy and drizzly weather. The zips themselves are tough, and come with fabric pull tabs that won’t rattle around, and are easier to find with gloved hands. The sleeves have sturdy, adjustable velcro tabs at the cuffs, which enable you to trap body heat inside when needed.
