Why We Chose The Hanwag Bunion Socks: Comfortable, thermoregulating, antimicrobial
Specialist bunion socks aren’t hard to come by these days. Ones uniquely tailored towards hiking and bunions, on the other hand, are pretty rare. That’s where Hanwag’s bunion socks come in. With added cushioning at the sole, the heel and bunion areas, as well as a merino wool build for natural thermoregulation, these socks should help ensure enjoyable hikes are had by all.
Who Are The Bunion Socks For?
As the name suggests, the Bunion socks are targeted towards wearers with bunions – a bony lump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. Whilst they should work well with most hiking shoes, they’re also specifically designed to be paired with Hanwag’s bunion shoe collection which include modified versions of the Tatra II and the Alta II, amongst others.
Materials and Construction
These bunion hiking socks are made from 40% Schoeller EXP merino wool, 29% polyamide, 28% polypropylene and 3% elastane. We’re particularly impressed with the high merino wool content here which should keep your feet nice and cosy whilst allowing enough air flow in that you don’t overheat at the same time. Merino wool is also naturally antimicrobial which is handy if you want to avoid a pongy kit bag.
The materials used have some nice eco features too, including an EX-pollution anti-felting treatment, as well as a chlorine-free wool finishing process that meets the bluesign® standard. This is actually the only chlorine-free wool finish to meet this standard at the moment.
Features
In terms of features, Hanwag have gone simple here, and primarily focused on the cushioning of the sock including extra plush at the sole, heel and bunion areas. As well as the key target area (the bunions), this additionally means that the rest of your foot should stay supported throughout your hikes.
The rim of the sock also features extra padding and reaches about mid-shin length (roughly), whilst the size options range from 3.5 to size 12.
