Salomon Evasion Mid GTX Boot | Performance

Salomon’s built an enviable reputation for light, supportive trail footwear that takes technology from their running range and applies it to hiking. Boots like the classic Quest manage to be quite high-ankled, but also also light and nimble.

The Evasion Mid is simpler and lower, think of it as a higher version of a hiking shoe with a little more ankle protection and you won’t go far wrong. It’s light, under 1000g for a pair of size 43s and feels immediately familiar if you’ve used other Salomon boots.

There’s good heel hold and a medium width and volume forefoot that works for a lot of people including the editorial test foot.

In use we found it properly comfortable. Supportive enough for us with good underfoot cushioning even on harder surfaces. And with reasonable grip on firm to medium surfaces. We did find we needed to tweak lacing tension to keep the ankle cuff comfortable and prevent it digging in on descents, but once done, the Evasion simply blended into the background and got on with being unobtrusively capable.

The flexible sole unit does give reasonable sideways support, but it won’t appeal to walkers who prefer a more traditional, stiffer sole on rougher ground. Equally although it does have rubber heel and toe-caps, we wouldn’t expect the Evasion to be as durable as heavier boots.
