Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer 40F Sleeping Bag | Review

A high quality, comfortable, warm sleeping bag which packs down easily from Mountain Hardwear

What do you think of when you hear the words ‘Ghost Whisperer’? You probably think of someone who can talk to ghosts – the supernatural equivalent of Robert Redford in 1998 cult Hollywood hit ‘The Horse Whisperer’?

If you’re a fan of the supernatural you might even think of the 2005 CBS drama ‘Ghost Whisperer’, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt helping spirits resolve their worldly issues and guiding guide them to the light for a full five seasons.

Well, think of Mountain Hardwear as the ‘Outdoor Whisperers’. They do for outdoor enthusiasts what Jennifer Love Hewitt does for spirits in that weird CBS drama. Except instead of guiding them to the light, they listen to what they need and want from a product, then guide them to extremely practical, top-of-the-line outdoor kit.

Take the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer 40F sleeping bag. It’s as lightweight and fully-featured as the legendary Mountain Hardwear jacket range with which it shares a name.

Aimed at fast and light hikers, every gram has been taken into account in this thing’s design. It’s been primed to keep that weight down, using a premium 900-fill power (that’s very high) goose down that should keep most hikers warm on mild nights from late spring to early autumn.

On top of this, the down is infused with a permanent water repellency meaning that the insulating performance can continue even when the bag gets exposed to moisture.

This impressive down fill is backed up by an equally impressive shell fabric. Ripstop and rated at 7 and 10 deniers, this is the stuff that makes the bag durable enough to withstand small scrapes; the stuff that’s able to prevent the bag from ripping open easily; and the stuff that will mean you won’t end up having to replace it after one season. It’s also the material that’s to thank for just how lightweight and compressible this bag is.

The six-baffled hood is designed to efficiently maintain heat around the head and neck and an insulated draft tube/inner baffle will prevent cold spots around the zipper. The mummy cut of the bag is also designed for maximising heat retention, minimising weight and keeping things snug. Some may be a little scared of a bag that has links to both mummies and ghosts of course, but the only frightening thing here is how much tech Mountain Hardwear have packed into this thing.

All of the above makes the Ghost Whisperer one of the best ultralight mountaineering and backpacking sleeping bags on the market right now. The warmth-to-weight ratio is outstanding and the packability sets it apart.

Tester Verdict

“This is a great sleeping bag. It is oh so comfortable. The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer hugs you. The material immediately feels good quality, and you feel safe and warm when you’re wrapped up inside it. One other albeit minor feature I particularly like is the parachute-style compression on the bag, which makes stashing this away and keeping it a manageable size a whole lot easier. Great product from Mountain Hardwear.” – Stuart Kenny, freelance adventure journalist.
