Suunto’s New Nepal Edition Watch

Suunto Launches Ambit3 Peak Nepal Edition GPS Watch

Suunto has just launched a new Nepal Edition of the brand’s Ambit3 Peak GPS watch with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each watch going to support a longterm earthquake relief programme in Nepal, which is being run by the Red Cross.

Crucial Time

It’s a crucial time for Nepal, with some of the publicity generated by the earthquake earlier this year dying away, but with serious problems still remaining. In particular it’s vital with the monsoon season approaching, says Suunto, ‘it is vital to get aid and shelter to the remoter locations before they are cut off by the rain and winter sets in.’

With that in view, the brand’s contributing €25 euros from the sale of each of the special edition Ambit3 Peak watches to a long term recovery programme being run by the Red Cross with the aim being to raise a total of €250k by the end of next July.

‘An expression of gratitude’

“For Suunto, taking action to support the reconstruction work in Nepal is an expression of gratitude towards the region that has offered so much to the mountaineering community,” explains Suunto President Mikko Moilanen.  “We carried out a fundraiser among our employees right after the disaster struck but the scale of the earthquakes was so massive we wanted to create an aid plan that extended beyond the initial relief.”

The watch itself is a top-end, outdoor-friendly GPS unit that can also supply weather information and be used to record speed, pace, distance and more as well as connecting to bike sensors using a Bluetooth Smart interface. Battery life is a claimed 30 hours.

As an aside, Suunto also recently launched the new Traverse GPS Watch which has many of the same capabilities, but also allows you to follow GPS routes using a mini topographical map displayed on the watch.
