These Guys Have Made The World's First Floating Sleeping Bag
...no need to worry about spilling that bottle of water anymore
World's First Floating Sleeping Bag
No, your eyes don't deceive you, that really is a man floating along a river in a sleeping bag filled with Nikwax's Hydrophobic Down. No Photoshopping or optical illusions, we saw it with our own eyes - honest, guv...
Top water-proofing and fabric care giant Nikwax, produces the fluorocarbon-free, water-resistant Hydrophobic Down now used in various outdoor brand's down-filled clothing and equipment and it rolled out the floating sleeping bag to demonstrate just how effective the treatment is.
Of course no-one's suggesting you use your sleeping bag as a stand-in life raft, but it's reassuring to know that if your tent or bivi bag springs a leak, you should stand a fighting chance of still having a functioning sleeping bag next morning.
How does it work? Here's a video explaining how the Hydrophobic Down is made.
We like hydrophobic down. It's like a sort of safety net that means if your down jacket gets soaked, it doesn't become instantly useless. The video from Go Outdoors above maybe slightly geeky, but it does a good job of explaining how the stuff works and what advantage it has along with some real-life scientific testing of the Nikwax-treated water-resistant down used by Rab in their latest kit.
Well worth sitting through if you're debating the pros and cons of water-resistant down.
