Rab Downpour Eco Waterproof Jacket | Review

Rab’s quest for net zero gathers pace with this superb waterproof jacket made from fully recycled materials

Why We Chose The Rab Downpour Eco: Eco-friendly, high performance, packs away small

Having achieved climate neutral status, British clothing and equipment stalwarts Rab are now on the journey towards net zero by 2030. The Downpour Eco Jacket is a clear indicator of their drive towards truly sustainable products, being forged from recycled materials and designed with further recycling in mind. However, there’s no compromise on quality here. This is a waterproof jacket fit for the rugged gritstone and atmospheric moors of Rab’s Derbyshire home; in other words, it’s built to withstand the challenging conditions often found in the British uplands. The jacket packs neatly into a backpack thanks to the way it stuffs into its own hand pocket.

Who Is The Rab Downpour Eco Jacket For?

The Downpour is the perfect choice for environmentally conscious hikers who are looking for a high-quality jacket that will fend off the worst of the elements. From seasoned hillwalkers and fast-and-light peak baggers to countryside ramblers and those who covet the coastal paths, the Downpour’s versatility and lightweight qualities make it a strong choice.

It is competitively priced, aimed at those who are serious about spending time in the outdoors but don’t want to break the bank. Little touches like map-sized pockets illustrate the attention to detail Rab have put into the hiker-friendly design. The Downpour is non-helmet compatible, so climbers, alpinists and winter walkers are better served by some of Rab’s more high-end options.

The Downpour is Rab’s first ever mono-polymer jacket, using recycled 2.5-layer Pertex Revolve fabric for both its inner and outer membrane. This means that at the end of its life, it can be fully recycled again, making it an environmentally conscious choice. Unlike some of their rivals, Rab are already using fluorocarbon-free DWR to treat the fabric, bestowing it with its waterproof qualities. Testing has awarded the Downpour a hydrostatic head rating of 20,000mm, meaning it can withstand all but the worst deluges.

As previously mentioned, the hood is non-helmet compatible but has adjustment points in the front and rear, allowing you to tailor it closely to your bonce when it’s blowing a hoolie. The flexible polymer peak works in tandem with this, keeping the wind and rain out of your face.

The front is zippered up its length, with a button fastening on the brushed tricot chin guard. Handy zippered handwarmer pockets are large enough to stash a map, as well as being ideal for gloves and other essentials. When things get stuffy on the ascent, you can open up the pit zips for added ventilation. All the zippers are protected by a storm guard flap, enhancing the jacket’s ability to fend off the elements. Fully adjustable cuffs are secured with Velcro, giving you the option to loosen when donning gloves. Its regular fit means that there’s enough space for your layering system but it’s versatile enough to still look good over a base layer on those muggy, wet summer days.
