Why We Chose the Rab Aeon Ultra 28L: versatile, lightweight, storage options.
British brand Rab’s streamlined Aeon range of backpacks are intended for the fast-moving mountain adventurer. In its Aeon Ultra packs, the Peak District-based manufacturer has brought all its experience to bear to deliver thoughtfully designed products that make use of recycled materials too. The Aeon Ultra comes in two sizes, 20L and 28L, has a range of potential applications and a strong array of easily accessible storage options.
These are lightweight trail running packs designed to flex with you for support and mobility on the trails – a tight yet comfortable fit is achieved by manipulating the pack’s sternum straps, giving you a comfortable backpack that doesn’t bounce around or shift as you progress.
Who Is The Rab Aeon Ultra 28L For?
The Aeon Ultra is a seriously versatile backpack, suitable for fastpacking, hut-to-hut trekking and day hiking. The 28L model weighs in at 700g, which is lighter than the vast majority of daypacks, making it an appealing proposition to adventure racers. Runners are better served by a smaller hydration pack for shorter distances but when it comes to lengthier pursuits, such as mountain marathons, the capacity and hydration bladder compatibility of the Aeon Ultra, are real plusses.
Storage
Storage solutions are rife on the Aeon Ultra and many have been designed to be easily accessible on the go. The left side strap has a zippered pocket that’s ideal for storing valuables, such as a phone or keys. It’s also joined by a mesh pocket for gels and the like. The right strap has a mesh pocket with a zippered expansion panel that’s been designed specifically for 500ml water flasks, while another small mesh pocket gives you even more small item storage. There are also zippered pockets on the padded hip belt.
Other items you may want to hand, such as gloves, hats or other snacks can be stored in the pockets on either side of the main compartment or in the large mesh pocket on the front of the main compartment. A bungee system on the waist and harness allows for secure storage of trekking poles too.
Features
A highly water-resistant main body is always going to help when it comes to fastpacking through mountains and the Aeon Ultra achieves this with 50% recycled nylon that’s tough enough to cope with challenging weather and repeated rock abrasion. The main compartment is also fully taped, giving enhanced water resistance, while its roll top closure can either be secured to the side, or can be secured above to maximise capacity.

The back of the pack is designed with a spacer mesh and curved back panel to ensure comfort, support and airflow to keep you cool and dry on long ascents. The Aeon Ultra is also hydration bladder compatible via the sleeve behind the back panel and straps on both sides allow you to secure a tube.
