PrimaLoft P.U.R.E. Manufacturing Technology | Review

All you need to know about PrimaLoft's new carbon emissions-limiting breakthrough in their manufacturing process

Patgonia’s Nano Puff jacket, pictured here, may not look all that different to previous generations, but in typical Patagonia style, it has been improved on the sustainability front by employing a synthetic fill with a groundbreaking technology behind it.

That fill is 100% recycled PrimaLoft Gold and it’s been produced using the U.S. brand’s new P.U.R.E manufacturing technology.

PrimaLoft P.U.R.E. (Produced Using Reduced Emissions) manufacturing technology is a new development that significantly cuts carbon emissions as compared to conventional production methods for synthetic fills.

It’s actually by nearly 50%. Apparently over 231,075kgs of carbon emissions have been avoided by PrimaLoft’s very creation of this technology.

“90% of PrimaLoft’s synthetics were already coming from recycled materials.”

And yet the product is genuinely still the same – you wouldn’t know the difference. So how have PrimaLoft achieved this? Well, since the 1980s the brand have had to use these huge ovens in order to bond their synthetic fibres together into the sheets of fill – and large quantities of coal and in some cases natural gases have been used to power them. Now, PrimaLoft have managed to cut out the need for these by creating a bonding method simply using air. They’ve essentially managed to alter the the composition of a resin spray, a common additive used alongside the binder fibres, and this now makes the fibres reactive simply to oxygen. So in lieu of ovens, the insulation can simply cure at room temp.

Patagonia are one of a number of brands to employ PrimaLoft's fill with P.U.R.E manufacturing technology.

It’s a significant development within the outdoor industry and that’s why progressive brands like Patagonia have been adopting it. 90% of PrimaLoft’s synthetics were already coming from recycled materials – now there’s that extra reassurance of far greater sustainability.

By the way, it’s also worth taking a look at PrimaLoft Bio too. With this the U.S. brand has managed to develop a fully synthetic insulation, made from recycled materials, that can fully biodegrade within two years. And no, that doesn’t mean it only has a two-year lifespan – it needs a landfill or ocean environment for it to start to break down. It’s quite remarkable stuff, it really is.

Our crew here at Outdoors Magic have tested the Nano Puff in its many iterations plenty of times over the years and it’s certainly still the reliable insulator we’ve always known it to be, with an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and also that ability to provide dependable warmth even in wet weather. With P.U.R.E. manufacturing technology now behind the creation of its fill, we like it even more.

“Synthetics are an easy victim to blame for so many of the sins attributed to the textile industry – but they will always have a role (if just to keep the price of garments affordable by the majority). By PrimaLoft creating better practice through its P.U.R.E manufacturing technology it is a standard for the industry to be inspired by. The bit I really like is how much of the fibre comes from recycled sources (so it changes the moan always posed about mining virgin petro-chemicals). You can understand why Patagonia want to partner with them as they are pressing so many buttons: the BIO additive, the partnership with Parley, & now P.U.R.E.”
