JetBoil Upgrades Its Stoves For 2015

We’re just back from the Outdoors Trade Show, aka ‘OTS’, the last remaining, but encouragingly buoyant British kit show and among the more interesting new bits of gear out there for 2015 was this, the new JetBoil MiniMo, an updated version of the brand’s PSC (Personal Cooking System).

The new stove has the same capacity as the existing all-on-one JetBoil Flash and the same all-in-one technology with heat exchanger for optimum efficiency, but is very obviously wider and shorter than the existing stoves, which we kind of like. The differences aren’t just cosmetic though, there are real practical advantages.

‘Lower Spoon Angle’

For starters, the lower centre of gravity should make for a slightly more stable unit than the taller, thinner Flash. Next, the shorter pan has what JetBoil calls a ‘lower spoon angle’. In other words, it’s easier to eat from thanks to the different shape – we were about toe ridicule the phrase, but it does pretty well sum up what’s going on.

Next the new stoves, like the JetBoil Joule we’ve just featured as a first look, has a much improved simmer control thanks to a finer thread on the adjusting valve. That means less scorched earth cooking, more controllability and hopefully improved fuel economy too.

Better Low Temperature Performance

Also in common with the Joule is the use of a new fuel regulator on the burner unit which means that the output of the stove remains constant, but also better performance at lower temperatures.

JetBoil says that heat output doesn’t begin to drop off until you reach -6˚C. That’s not quite as hardcore as the Joule with its inverted canister, liquid feed, but definitely good news for winter campers and trekkers.

And last but not least, the heat resistant pot cosies come in a variety of neat graphics with a camo option for folk who aspire to the Bear Grylls lifestyle.

How Much?

The MiniMo is set to be available from around February in 2015 and will retail for £135 in the UK – the price of the Flash, which will remain in the range, is £105.
