Hanwag Anros ES Hiking Boot | Review

An eco-friendly waterproof option with some quality leather

Purpose-built by German outdoor experts Hanwag with sustainability, durability and active use on cold days in mind, the Anros ES is a hiking boot you can really rely on.

Last year, we tested out another option by Hanwag called the Anvik GTX and it massively impressed us with its durability, warmth and comfort. With this, the Anros ES, we think it’s safe to say all of those same qualities are there, but it can boast a few extra things as well.

“With Eco-Shell, you won’t find any of those nasty PFCs…”

With its specially designed sole and warm lining, this is a boot that’s made for winter walking. By this, we don’t mean you’d wear it over blizzard-beaten mountains, but rather on low-level hikes in the cold and on snowy or ice-coated tracks.

The inner lining is actually made from a 100 per cent recycled nylon, and that’s not the only credential in regards to sustainability…

The waterproof lining is made from Eco-Shell, a clever membrane that’s based on the same technology that Fjällräven use for their mountaineering jackets.

Most standard waterproof linings over the last few years have used PFCs as a necessary ingredient in their durable water repellent coating and in recent years these have been proven to be harmful to the environment. Active scientific studies are also exploring whether these could be harmful to the human body. With Eco-Shell, you won’t find any of these nasty PFCs but you’ll still get the same waterproof performance. We like that.

Aside from the sustainable aspects, there’s also plenty to talk about in terms of the boot’s design details. Take the ‘StraightFit’ shape which means there’s extra room in the toe box for wear-all-day-comfort, the Michelin V-Rough sole which guarantees grip and traction even on slush and snow (specifically on slush and snow) and the high-quality nubuck leather upper.

There’s also the ‘cemented construction’, which ensures the Anros ES is long-lasting and re-soleable when necessary.

It’s a good looking boot, that’s for sure. The style is minimalistic and traditional so you can get away with wearing your comfy shoes into a town for a coffee even once your back from the hills.

Tester’s Verdict

“This is a good old fashioned-looking boot, but one with some modern technical details. It goes beyond the old remit of “let’s just make something that looks like it can take a beating” and gets all the important, practical stuff right. I wore them straight out of the box on a day spent plodding around Scottish bogs and I returned with dry feet that were blister-free. A close fit and the eco-friendly production are the cherries on top for me. This is a boot. And a good one at that.”
