Fjällräven Greenland Summer 2018 Range | Preview

Get a first look at the key pieces from the latest Fjällräven range, as the brand celebrates the 50th Birthday of its iconic Greenland Jacket

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Fjällräven’s much-loved Greenland Jacket, and to celebrate the milestone the Swedish brand are releasing a new range inspired by their iconic piece.

The original jacket was created when a team from Scandinavia went on an expedition to none other than Greenland in 1966. With no adequate outerwear available the team’s jackets and trousers were all heavy, and slow-drying. This led Fjällräven founder Åke Nordin to begin work on a jacket that could stand up to the rigours of such an adventure.

Two years later, the Greenland was born. It was a jacket designed to perform when you needed to rely on it, whether it was wet, dry, cold, warm, or windy. It was a jacket that was designed to last, and last it has – it’s been worn by generation after generation of outdoor adventurers.

“The Greenland Jacket was designed to last, and last it has”

Fjällräven have looked back at their original jacket and used it as the inspiration for their new Greenland collection. It features updated versions of existing favourites, and a host of new ones that sit perfectly under that Greenland name.

The new collection builds on the classic range, keeping true to the look and feel of the originals, but now going even further to ensure that the new generation is made in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way.

Greenland Jacket

On to our introduction to the new items themselves. There’s only really one place to start, and that’s the Greenland Jacket. If it looks familiar, it’s because it is. It keeps all of the aesthetics of the classic Fjällräven Greenland Jacket, but with some modern updates to some of the things you can’t see.

The updated Greenland Jacket

The 2018 Greenland Jacket is made from Fjällräven’s own durable wind and water-resistant G-1000 Eco fabric, and it’s impregnated with Greenland Wax for extra weather protection. There have also been slight changes to the shape of both the men’s and women’s versions, making them more ergonomic, and less boxy than before, with the women’s version being tailored specifically for an improved fit.

Greenland Zip Shirt Jacket

The Greenland Zip Shirt Jacket for men has been introduced following the success of the buttoned female version which was released in 2017. This is the perfect light jacket for times when you’re riding your bike, or out for a quick hike and want something casual that will still offer a degree of protection from wind and light rain (especially if treated with Greenland Wax).

The new Greenland Zip Shirt Jacket

Made from G-1000 Eco fabric, it’s wind and water resistant, and also features UPF 50+ protection, keeping harmful UV rays away. The Zip Shirt Jacket is also cut slightly longer at the back to ensure your body stays warm, and the collar can be folded up and kept in place with a tab and a press button, which is handy.

Greenland Jeans & Greenland Shorts

Imagine the everyday comfort of jeans, but with the functionality of a pair of hiking trousers. It almost sounds like an oxymoron, but Fjällräven have nailed it with their Greenland Jeans. Fjällräven’s G-1000 Eco is in play again here, so you already know they’re going to be durable, as well as wind and water resistant.

The Greenland Jeans are designed for men and feature articulated knees to ensure comfort and freedom of movement, be that when you’re walking through fields, climbing over rocks and boulders, or casting out into a lake.

For summer days when full-length trousers are too much, Fjällräven bring you the Greenland Shorts. These take all of the features of the Greenland Jeans (minus the articulated knees, for obvious reasons) and make for an option that should be perfect for long summer hikes and backpacking trips.

Greenland Zip Hoodie

This new Greenland item adds to Fjällräven’s collection of functional hoodies which already includes the popular Övik and the Polar Fleece which we chose for last year’s Winter Outdoor 100.

It’s made from non-twisting felpa, which despite sounding like something done from a high-dive board, is a plush fleece fabric that Fjällräven make from 100 per cent organic cotton. There’s also a women’s version, which has Raglan sleeves, creating a less squared-off silhouette.

Greenland Top pack

Fjällräven are well known for their stylish, functional backpacks, and the new Greenland Top pack is no exception. It’s ideal for a day out walking in the hills and it’s equally well suited to stuffing full of your work things when Monday rolls around again. Its 15 inch laptop sleeve even has a padded base, handy for when the train carriage is standing-room-only.

As well as looking good, it’s a tough old bag, being made from G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco, a thicker and equally as wind and water repellent fabric as that used in many of Fjällräven’s clothes in the Greenland collection.

Greenland Beanie

The Greenland Beanie is a handy thing to stuff in your pack when you’re out walking during the summer, ready to pull out when the temperature goes down with the sun.

It also does a good job of hiding sleeping bag hair in the morning, should your adventure have involved an overnight stop. Made from organic cotton, the Greenland Beanie is ribbed, and features a fold up edge.

Greenland Wax

The Greenland collection, true to the original concept, is designed to last a long time, and treating items correctly with it will prolong their longevity. Greenland Wax is the best way of maintaining and enhancing the wind and water repellency of any of the Greenland items made from the G-1000 fabric which, as you can see, is a lot of them.

It’s based on the same wax produced by Fjällräven founder Åke Nordin all of those years ago, and is made from paraffin and beeswax, which is not only good for us, but also good for the environment. A single 100g block should wax around about ten items, size dependent.

The new Greenland Updated collection from Fjällräven is available from the brands network of specialist independent retailers,  visit the store locator to find your nearest one.
