Based at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, CimAlp is a French brand who have been creating high performance mountain gear since the 1960s. With the peaks, couloirs and snowfields of the Alps as their testing ground, they specialise in hiking, trail running, skiing and mountaineering apparel and accessories.

Their Hoggar 3H trousers manage to offer a fully waterproof yet lightweight package for hikers, while representing great value for money too. Named after the distinctive Hoggar Mountains of Algeria, a range characterised by spectacular, erosion-resistant volcanic plugs, it’s fitting that the Hoggar walking trousers are also designed to stand firm against whatever the elements throw at them.

The Hoggars are ideal for hikers who’d rather take just one pair of trousers, rather than the usual duo of hiking pants coupled with waterproof over trousers. Designed for all types of hiking, from summer hut trekking to winter walking, their weatherproof credentials and freedom of movement makes them a shrewd purchase.

Of course, more robust and protective waterproof trousers exist for hardcore mountaineers but, at this price point, it’s hard to fault the Hoggars. It’s worth pointing out that they are slightly large in terms of sizing, so CimAlp advise that if you are choosing between two sizes, opt for the smaller.

Fabrics

CimAlp’s proprietary waterproof membrane provides the all-important shield against the elements, while thermo-sealed seams batten down the hatches even further. With a hydrostatic head rating of 10,000 mm, the Hoggars will repel rain and deal with the vast majority of conditions in the British hills. The 3-layer fabric is also stretchy, breathable, windproof and durable, meaning you can expect freedom of movement, comfort and warmth for many mountain adventures.

Features

It’s remarkable how multiple pockets increase the usability of hiking trousers. The Hoggars come with three and all are waterproof. There are two zippered front side pockets and a large, pleated pocket on the right thigh, ideal for items like phones, keys and cards. Dynamic activities have clearly been thought through, as evidenced by the Hoggars’ pre shaped knees, which allow for unrestricted movement when running or scrambling.

For a precise fit, the waistband is part elasticated, with adjustable belt loops to tailor to your size. The waist is higher at the rear to give your lower back additional protection. A zipper and two poppers give access at the front for when nature calls. Meanwhile, winter walkers will benefit from reinforced nylon crampon guards, which only increase the Hoggars’ general durability.
