Bach Equipment ReCOVER Down -5 Sleeping Bag | Review

A three-season sleeping bag that uses recycled down and that comes with some nifty touches too

This year, one standout product in our Greener Gear Guide is the ReCOVER down sleeping bag by Bach Equipment. After putting it to the test during a recent camping trip in the stunning Lake District, I’m here to share my insights on its eco-friendly credentials and real-world performance.

Eco-Friendly Construction

This showcases the same innovative, eco-focussed design thinking seen in Bach’s Relay 3R sleeping mat, which I reviewed earlier in the year. It’s crafted from bluesign-approved, 100% recycled shell and liner fabrics, alongside 100% recycled down insulation.

This down is sourced from post-consumer products such as old down jackets, duvets, and pillows, which are meticulously collected, cleaned, sterilized, and processed to retain their insulating properties. Sometimes recycled down can be a bit lacking in quality but this stuff has a fill power of 750 and comprises 90% down clusters and 10% feathers, so it’s all good stuff. You can also tell this by the loftiness of the bag overall – nice and puffy!

Performance in the Field

One of the unique aspects of the ReCOVER Down – and I think this is a really nifty touch – is its innovative waterproof membrane at the foot end. This design feature prevents the insulation from contacting the damp surfaces of your tent or bivy bag – something I’ve often wished for during previous camping trips. The membrane, combined with a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment, is also PFAS-free, enhancing its appeal from a sustainability standpoint.

With a three-season comfort rating of -2 degrees Celsius, the Recover is well-suited for cooler spring and autumn nights. I tested it during an unexpectedly chilly trip in the Lake District, and it kept me comfortably warm throughout the night. For those who need a bit more warmth, a heavier -8 degree version is available, along with a lighter 0-degree option for milder conditions.

Functional Features

The ReCOVER Down is packed with thoughtful details. Its draught collar and zip baffle effectively minimise heat loss, while the double zip allows for ventilation at the base on any warmer nights. I particularly appreciated the zippered pocket, ideal for stowing a head torch or small essentials. The sleeping bag also comes with a fully waterproof stuff sack that doubles as a dry bag, adding to its versatility.

The foot end has a waterproof fabric.

In terms of portability, the Recover Down compresses down impressively small, making it easy to pack. Weighing just over 1 kg for the regular length model, it’s remarkably light given its warmth. There are also options for a slightly lighter short length and a slightly heavier long length, catering to various preferences.

Conclusion

Kudos to Bach Equipment for developing a sleeping bag that’s not only functional but that also aligns with sustainable practices. The Recover Down Sleeping Bag is ideal for UK wild camping, bikepacking, and backpacking. It’s great to see recycled down sleeping bags reaching a high-quality standard, and the Recover Down seems to have perfected the balance between performance and sustainability.
