Every year since 2005, hundreds of hikers have made the journey to the north of Sweden to backpack through 110km of its wilderness as part of the Fjällräven Classic, arguably the most popular trekking event in the world. Now the Swedish outdoor clothing specialists are bringing a version of it to the UK – more specifically the Cairngorms National Park.
Taking place this summer from the 9th – 11th of July, the new route is part of an initiative by the brand to extend its legendary Classic trekking events across the globe. They’ll not only be taking place in Sweden and Scotland this year, but also in Denmark, Germany, Korea, Hong Kong, China and the US.
The concept for each one is the same. Participants travel from one point to another along a waymarked trail, with their tent, sleeping and cooking equipment all carried on their backs.
The Scotland event will be 60km in length, stretching from Blair Atholl on the southern boundary of the national park, right, through to Glenmore in the north. As is the case with the Swedish version of the trek, the route will mostly stick in the valleys and passes rather than venturing high up onto the tops.
Fjällräven will be on hand to support participants along the way, stationing experts at various checkpoints along the route where walkers can get advice and restock with food and gas.
Tickets for Classic UK will go on sale on 23rd January at 9am. As places are limited, people will have 12 hours on the 23rd to register their interest after which tickets will be randomly assigned and those selected will receive an email with a link to buy tickets. Tickets not purchased within 12 hours of the email being sent will then be offered to the next person on the list.
