Hoka One One are adding three new hiking boots to their range, and in keeping with the brand’s tradition, they’re going to be pretty out there in terms of design.
Primarily a running shoe brand, ‘Hoka’ began in France right at the peak of the minimalist shoe trend when zero drop, low cushioning designs were seen as the best way to facilitate a more ‘natural’ way of running. With its ultra thick but marshmallowy and light midsole, and ‘rocker’ shape to the whole sole unit itself, Hoka One One had really bucked the trend.
While there were some runners who raised their eyebrows, there were plenty who fully embraced the Hoka approach, seeing those chunky soles as the key to speedy trail descents with less of an impact on the muscles and joints.

Recognising that there are plenty of hikers out there who are looking for a mid cut walking boot with those benefits, Hoka made a move into the market, launching the Tor Ultra design – a useful option for long distances at a much, much lighter weight than more traditional options.
Picking up where that boot left off, for Spring 2019 Hoka One One will be releasing their new Sky Series. Coming in at three different price points, we’ll see the Sky Toa (£160), the Sky Arkali (£170; pictured above) and the Sky Kaha (£180).
The Sky Kaha, the top-level option, looks particularly interesting. It’s supposed to offer a “supreme weight-to-cushion ratio” according to Hoka, and will come in slightly less, um, obnoxious colour ways – in comparison to the brand’s other hiking and running designs anyway. Notable features will include a waterproof eVent bootie in the upper, Vibram Megagrip sole, and a last design that’s specifically shaped to support long days on the trail. The soles will also have that trademark rocker shape to gently propel the wearer forward.
The three designs, each in men’s and women’s versions, will be available in March both online and in selected retailers. Keep an eye out for a review on this site at the start of 2019.
