When you’re camping out on a proper, authentic, mountain adventure the last thing you want is for your tent to crumble around you the first time an above-mild breeze brushes against it. With the Access 2 tent from MSR, this kind of nightmare scenario is fortunately extremely unlikely.
The Access 2 tent, you see, has been designed to withstand some of the worst camping weather imaginable. Seriously. Fall asleep in this thing halfway up a mountain, and you can rest soundly in the knowledge it will still be standing come morning.
This is in fact a four-season tent, designed to be the ultimate shelter for backcountry skiers, split boarders, and snowshoers. It’s warmer than your standard backpacking tent but lighter than your run-of-the-mill mountaineering tent. The tent’s body has had limited mesh incorporated into it, meaning it’s considerably more cosy when the temperatures hit rock bottom.
“As a camping solution for any time of year in the UK it really doesn’t get much better than this genuinely excellent four-season, two-person, tent from MSR.”
It’s impressively light given that it’s designed to withstand winter weather, so while there are lighter options which might work better for say, a mountain marathon in the warmer months, you could happily take it on a summer camping trip without the weight ever bothering you.
We were impressed with the size of the tent’s interior – the idea being that it offers plenty of room for adventurers to remove layers and add layers while inside (rather than outside in the cold). It’s quick and uncomplicated to pop up, another useful feature when you consider the extreme type of weather it’s purposed for being used in, while the strong frame is more than a match for overnight snow loading and other batterings thrown its way by Mother Nature.
