For most of us, a single Bob Graham round of the Lakeland fells would be tough enough, but Nicky Spinks chose to run the whole thing twice and, remarkably, set a record for the 132-mile route which was over an hour faster than the previous best.
What makes that even more impressive is that Spinks set out on the epic run – it also takes in around 54,000ft of ascent – to mark the tenth anniversary of her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2006.
‘It was a celebration of my 10 years post-diagnosis. I wanted to give hope to others and show people what can be achieved’ – Nicky Spinks
Since then she’s become one of the best female ultra runners with numerous impressive performances. That said, prior to her double round, she’d never run for more than 36 hours in one go, despite aiming for a schedule that would take her under 48 hours.
Her plan aimed at a 47 hour completion, but her eventual finishing time was 45 hours and 30 minutes which included a break to eat fish, chips and curry sauce at Dunmail after completing day one and fried egg and beans at Portinscale. That’s what we call advanced sports nutrition…
Impressive stuff and set to be marked by a film called Run Forever which is due for release at this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival in November.
