Why we chose them: Reliable, well-built, long lasting
We try to think a little bit outside the box with our Green Gear Guide, not just looking for the brands with new innovations but also the ones that are helping to facilitate change. And that’s why we’ve included Hydro Flask this year.
It should go without saying that cutting back on single use plastics is vitally important in our fight against climate change and Hydro Flasks new Food Jars are the kind of products that can really help us to facilitate our own measures.
A number of different sizes (and colours) are available within the collection, with the smallest coming in at 8oz and the biggest a whopping 28oz. Using the same technology as Hydro Flask’s famous double-wall vacuum insulated flasks, these things are capable of keeping things like pasta, noodles, rice, casseroles, soups etcetera all warm for hours. That means you can prep some pasta and sauce before work and have something nice and hot when lunch comes around. These things use a lovely pro-grade stainless steel, which, while obviously incredibly durable, has the other benefit of not retaining or transferring any flavours, so your morning porridge isn’t going to taste like yesterday’s carrot and coriander soup.

The Food Jars pictured here are the 8oz sizes – that’s a 236ml volume. We found they were the perfect size for a portion of porridge and they’ve also been great for keeping things like fruit salad nice and cool and fresh on those hot summer days. The lid’s surprisingly wide, so you can easily get a fork or spoon inside to scoop stuff out and it’s equally easy to sip from as well.
Reliability
You know sometimes you get a lid that looks like it’s been screwed on properly and you only discover that it hasn’t actually threaded correctly when you’ve got juice all over the bottom of your bag? That’s never an issue here; from our experiences with the Flood Jars, you’re guaranteed a secure seal every time. Oh, and the lids are made from a nice rubbery material that’s easy to grip, even with wet hands or when you’re wearing gloves.
More From The Brand
Alongside the Food Jars in these pictures, you can also see the Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth bottle and the 21 oz Standard Mouth and these are in the brand’s new Eggplant and Clementine seasonal colours for autumn. New colours but same old performance – you can expect these to keep liquid ice cold for 24 hours and things like tea or coffee piping hot for 12 hours.
