Why We Chose It: Lightweight, stylish, recycled materials
At this point, it’s virtually a given that the all-conquering Fjällräven will crop up somewhere in our Green Gear Guide. Quite simply, the Swedish brand is one of the industry leaders when it comes to sustainable, environmentally conscious outdoor kit, and has been pretty much since the company’s founding by Åke Nordin way back in 1960.
Their latest synthetic insulated jacket, the Expedition X- Lätt, continues that fine tradition with a fully recycled shell and lining, and a fill that is also made of 80% recycled content. In addition, the water-repellent treatment on the face fabric of the jacket is completely PFC-free.
What Is The Fjällräven Expedition X-Lätt Best Suited To?
Bringing the brand’s signature understated and slightly retro outdoor style, the X-Lätt is a versatile beast. It offers enough technical performance – namely, lightweight warmth and good moisture-resistance – to be a viable lightweight layer for hiking, camping and backpacking adventures. But its striking looks also ensure it will be equally at home in everyday life or on more casual outdoor excursions.
Eco Credentials
When it comes to shell fabrics, most outdoor aficionados generally prefer nylon to polyester. That’s because nylon is a much stronger fibre than polyester for its weight, so it generally offers superior durability. The problem is that in terms of recyclability, nylon is a much more difficult material to recycle than polyester. It can be done – it’s just more expensive and time-consuming. That’s why it is impressive that with this jacket, Fjällräven has managed to source both a shell fabric and a lining that are made from 100% recycled polyamide (nylon).
