Revolution Race Cyclone Rescue Jacket 2.0 | Review

A multi-functional waterproof jacket for ski runs, trails and crags from Swedish brand Revolution Race

Why We Chose The Revolution Race Cyclone Rescue Jacket 2.0: Multi-functional, waterproof, durable

Revolution Race champion the Cyclone Rescue Jacket 2.0 as the obvious choice for year-round use in the mountains and it’s hard to disagree. The brand’s mission – to make multi-purpose, high-quality outdoor wear at affordable prices – is woven into its DNA. The Cyclone Rescue Jacket 2.0 is an exhibitionist, with enough tricks up its sleeve to make it a go-to for all manner of outdoor enthusiasts. Probably its most notable trick (which is literally up its sleeve) is the Recco reflector, which aids emergency services, hence the ‘Rescue’ tag in its name

Who Is The Revolution Race Cyclone Rescue Jacket 2.0 For?

This is a waterproof jacket designed with multiple functions in mind. Its hood is helmet compatible, a nod to climbers, mountain bikers, skiers and winter walkers, while the arm features a pocket neatly sized for a ski pass.

However, this isn’t just a jacket for adrenaline junkies; it is just as at home on the hiking trails and will give you year-round protection from wind and rain. Better still, the fabric’s high elastane content gives it a four-way stretch, which gives you superb freedom of movement and comfort – so important considering its potential uses. It is competitively priced and, considering its versatility, makes for a shrewd acquisition.

Materials

The Cyclone Rescue Jacket features Revolution Race’s own three-layer Hypershell Pro fabric, treated with a PFC-free DWR to give it its waterproof qualities. Boasting a hydrostatic head rating of 15,000mm, it can fend off a rainstorm just as well as most other jackets in its price range. When compared to the competition, it also holds its own in the breathability stakes, with an impressive MVTR (moisture vapour transmission rate) of 20,000g/m2/24hr.

The three-layer fabric is soft against the skin and pleasingly quiet when on the move. There’s enough space under here for all your other layers, yet the jacket holds its shape well enough to be worn over just a base layer and still look sharp.

Features

There’s a quintet of zippered pockets here, two sizeable hand pockets, a chest pocket, a sleeve ski pass pocket and an inner pocket for your valuables. It’s fair to say you’ll never want for easy-access to your compass, sugary snacks or gloves. The heat generated by gruelling ascents can be tempered by the ventilation offered by the two-way pit zips.

The hood comes with a three-way adjustment, so you can tailor it to the conditions and to whether or not you’re clad in a helmet (Viking helmets not recommended). Meanwhile, the adjustable zippered storm collar gives you added protection on those days when the gnarl is out to get you.

The jacket also includes a Recco reflector, which helps the emergency services to locate you, should you find yourself in need of rescue.

Tester’s Verdict

Jamie Barnes, outdoor photographer and filmmaker

“Revolution Race is a brand I’ve only recently started hearing about, but I have to say I’m extremely impressed with the Cyclone Rescue Jacket I have been using. I spend a lot of time in the mountains and dense forests, so I’ve needed a durable jacket that is going to keep me dry and not going to get torn up by the elements. It’s certainly on the heavier side of durable shell jackets, but the vents under the arms and adjustable neck and wrist sections make it adaptable to the conditions if you start to get too warm.”
