Sherpa Lithang Bib Pants | Review

Named after one of the highest inhabited places on the globe, the Sherpa Lithang Bib Pants are something special

When you’re hiking or mountaineering, getting a good pair of trousers is important, and not purely for modesty reasons. Staying warm, dry, comfortable, and protected from the elements is of paramount importance, especially if the peaks you’re going to be attempting are covered in snow, which is increasingly common at this time of year.

The problem you get with regular trousers is that when they get wet, they get heavy and if they’re not a good fit, can start slipping down your legs, resulting in you adopting the accidental builder look as your arse slowly gets exposed to the elements.

“They’re named after Lithang in Tibet which, at a dizzying altitude of 4014 metres, is one of the highest places on the planet.”

The fine people at Sherpa have addressed this with their Lithtang Bib trekking trousers by, well, adding a bib. Pronounced ‘lee∙tung’ (a vital tip for sounding like you know what you’re talking about when you hit the shop to order a pair) these walking trousers are named after Lithang town in Tibet which, at a dizzying altitude of 4,014 metres, is one of the highest places on the planet. Needless to say Sherpa have made their trousers equally as special.

The first thing you’ll notice, of course, is the bib element of the Lithang Hybrid Bib trousers. The suspenders not only help keep the trousers in place when the going gets tough, but the bib element also ensures greater coverage over your torso. Even in snowy conditions, the chances of the elements creeping in and soaking your base layers are significantly reduced. And if you’re in conditions, maybe in the summer, where you don’t need the bib, you can take it off easily.

The trousers themselves are made from Sherpa’s own Himaltech fabric. This has a mightily impressive 20,000mm/20,000mg waterproof and breathablity rating, so you know that when the weather turns nasty, you’re still going to stay warm, dry and comfortable. The trousers are also really flexible, so you can push them as hard as you push yourself, and you can be assured they’ll keep up.

They’re designed to handle serious winter climbs, and proper summit attempts. You can ski in them too if you want. They have snow gaiters on the inside of the legs that will keep the snow out of your boots, zippered thigh vents for dumping heat when you need it and adjustable tabs on the waist so you can really customise the fit.

All in all, these are a seriously high-performance pair of trousers that will see you through the worst winter conditions in comfort and style.
