Mammut Trovat Pro Half Zip Base Layer | Review

Bae layer made from Polartec's Power Wool - for next-to-skin comfort, while having fast wicking and drying capabilities.

Overview

Polartec’s Power Wool is by no means the only merino wool/synthetic hybrid fabric out there – check out Rab’s MeCo and Montane’s Primino for example – but it works differently to those blends. How? In really simple terms the 34% merino wool sits in micro-gridded form on the inside of the fabric, next to the skin for comfort, while the fast wicking and drying 66% Polyester element is on the outside to wick and clear moisture.

In the case of the Mammut Trovat Pro, it’s a medium-weight sort of fabric – as opposed to ‘almost microfleece’ stuff which often gets called ‘expedition weight’ and it’s brilliantly comfortable being super soft both inside and out.

Deluxe Feel

Words like ‘deluxe’ and ‘luxury’ spring to mind, which is just as well, because the price at £80 is right up there with top notch merino wool alternatives from the likes of Icebreaker and Smartwool. As you’d expect from Mammut, the execution is state of the art with a long central zip for venting, flat-locked seams all-round, seam-free shoulder tops and general niceness all round.

The fit is good in an athletic way – Mammut says ‘regular’, but Mammut regular is still quite sleek – and the fabric works well. Specifically it wicks and dries significantly more quickly than pure merino, it’s very comfortable agains the skin and it has good odour resistance with repeated use, though not quite as good as pure merino.

All in all, it’s a really nice cool weather baselayer, with the venting zip, comfortable collar and rollable sleeves all adding versatility. It also has a UPF factor of 20+, handy if you find yourself trekking across a high altitude glacier.

If there’s a downside, it’s the steepish price of some £80, but then that’s what you’d expect given the combination of an expensive new fabric and an elite, alpine-focused Swiss brand.

Verdict

Deluxe, versatile cool conditions base-layer top with a versatile design that gives a combination of great, soft-feel comfort and decent moisture and odour-handling performance.

Pros

Luxury level comfort, decent wicking and fast drying, good odour resistance, versatile design, quality feel, athletic cut.

Cons

Somewhat spendy, doesn’t wick as fast as some pure synthetics.
