Robens Primacore 60 Sleeping Mat | Review

Guarantee yourself a comfortable night's sleep with this packable sleeping mat

Camping is at its best when it’s wild, when it’s deep in the great outdoors when it’s well-earned – looking out over views that you’ve hiked hours for and on top of peaks you’ve had to battle to reach.

After all that hard work, when you reach your camping spot, whether you have indeed trekked miles or simply set up the tent a few kilometres into the hills to look back out on the view, the last thing you want is an uncomfortable set up to lie back on.

Camping is at its best, of course, when it’s comfortable.

That’s where a good sleeping mat is absolutely essential, and the standard of sleeping mats available at reasonable rates really has come on leaps and bounds over the last five or so years.

Take the Robens PrimaCore 60 sleeping mat, which inflates to provide amazing comfort when you go to lie down in the wild. It’s one of the best options on the market.

“It’s comfortable, easy to carry, simple to inflate and deflate, and will keep you happy while you sleep”

A flat, narrow valve on the sleeping mat allows both quick inflation and deflation, meaning you don’t have to faff about or burst your lungs after you’ve already put them through enough work on your way up to your camping spot. Worth bearing in mind is that, for even quicker inflation you can use one of Robens’ pump-bag accessories (sold separately).

The horizontal baffle design is purpose-built to adapt to the body for maximum comfort while maintaining a firm support that keeps you level.

PrimaLoft is basically the benchmark when it comes to synthetic insulation. The product is widely used in jackets, trousers and sleeping bags, and Robens have put it to great use in their sleeping mat here. Many call PrimaLoft the best alternative to down.

The insulation to weight ratio is impressive as well, with the mat weighing in at 580g and also tucking away into a small, convenient carry bag which allows you to pack it away for your journey without taking up much space in your backpack.

Easy to carry, simple to inflate and deflate, and it’ll keep you happy while you sleep. There’s not much more to ask for in the PrimaCore 60.

Tester’s Verdict

“Comfy. Comfy. Comfy. I brought this out with me for a weekend in my local Pentland Hills, and made sure to make it an especially long walk so that I’d have really earned my lie down on the PrimaCore come bedtime. I am pleased to announce that a) it did not rain on said trip, and b) the PrimaCore did not disappoint. It’s incredibly easy to inflate, deflate and pack away, and when it is set up, offers great comfort. Didn’t take up much of the pack either.” – Stuart Kenny, OM Gear Tester
