Big Agnes Releases Eco-Friendly Sleeping Mat Made From Sugarcane Resin | Gear News

Billed as the “sweetest piece of gear in your pack”

The new TwisterCane BioFoam Sleeping Pad is an ultralight camping mat made from sugarcane biomass in a process that removes carbon from the atmosphere. Now that’s a sweet achievement.

“Big Agnes is committed to producing gear made from the most sustainable materials possible to help minimise our environmental impacts and increase the durability of our products,” says Bill Gamber, co-founder and president of Big Agnes. “The unique materials sourced for this pad, as well as new solution-dyed fabric tents, will help lower the energy consumption, water use and chemicals used for production. Our team is working hard to reduce our impacts, one pad and tent at a time.”

How does this eco boffinry all work? Well, the TwisterCane BioFoam Sleeping Pad is made from an environmentally conscious material – a unique EVA foam that contains more than 60% sustainably grown sugarcane resin. Sugarcane is a renewable raw material that contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by capturing CO2 from the atmosphere, thus helping to combat climate change and other environmental problems. Moreover, the sugarcane resin sourced by Big Agnes is grown following Proforest ethical standards in a net carbon-negative process.

But is it actually any good out in the mountains and on the trail? Big Agnes claim the pad is an “ultralight” and “comfortable backcountry mat”, striking a fine balance between warmth and comfort. It is a closed-cell foam style mat, smooth on one side with a tyre-like tread on the other. This structure delivers “die-cut peaks and heat-trapping valleys”, with the option of dimples up or down depending on preference, and provides a firm, cushioned barrier between you and the ground. Big Agnes says it has been engineered for ultralight expeditions in warmer conditions – or can be paired with an inflatable air chamber pad for four-season protection.

The TwisterCane BioFoam Sleeping Pad is very affordable, priced at just $49.95. It weighs 397g and rolls away tightly to a compact 51 x 18cm, making it light and small enough to carry anywhere. Rolled out the mat is 183cm long and 51cm wide. The R-Value is 1.7 (making it suitable for spring and summer only), with a 13mm thickness. A TwisterCane BioFoam Hiking Seat is also available, priced at $24.95.
