Cool new cooking pot from Alpkit incorporating a heat exchanger base which makes it more efficient than conventional pots. The concept’s used by the likes of Primus, MSR and JetBoil, but the advantage of this is that you can utilise it with pretty much any stove.

Why get one

It’s all about that little bit of folded metal attached to the base of a pan, which increases the surface area to capture your stoves heat before transferring it through to heat your meal. Basically it’ll heat stuff up quicker.

One Day As A Tiger by John Porter book

What is it

It’s the story of Alex Macintyre, charismatic British alpinist who died young pushing the limits of lightweight climbing in the Himalaya when he was struck on the head by a single rock on Annapurna.

Written by one of his climbing partners, John Porter, it’s a really readable insight into Macintyre himself but also a distinctive period in mountaineering history when the emphasis shifted from huge siege-style expeditions – the British ones were generally led by Chris Bonington – to smaller, self-sufficient lightweight attempts by just a hand-full of climbers, which is where modern big range mountaineering has got to now. On a broader level, it’s also a poignant look back at the impetuousness of youth.

Why get one

The Banff Mountain Film And Book Festival Grand Prize Winning book really gets into the mind of Alex and particularly the difficult, driven and complex nature of his character. Just an all-round fascinating read.
