Fjällräven’s new lightweight trousers for men and women are so good they throw some serious shade at the competitors.

The Abisko part of the range’s name comes from the beautiful Abisko National Park in Sweden, which is of course the country that outdoor apparel experts Fjällräven call home.

With the Abisko Shade Zip-Off trousers, Fjällräven have produced a bit of kit that is lightweight, comfortable, incredibly breathable and perfect for hiking in warm and clammy weather.

When the mercury really hits the heights, there’s the added benefit that they can be converted into either three-quarter lengths or shorts thanks to their quick and easy to use zips and buttons.

The most important detail to highlight on these trousers (other than the zips) is that they’re made from a material called G-1000 Air, a recycled blend of polyester and organic cotton which has an incredibly light breathable feel to it.

This is in a single layer throughout most of the trousers, but in areas of high abrasion and wear the fabric is doubled up. The result? Light and airy but a long lifespan as well. As it’s G-1000, you can also add Fjällräven’s Greenland Wax to improve their performance in wet weather.

We’re big fans of zip-off trousers in general – it’s always good to have that adaptability because all-too-often the weather doesn’t turn out as you expected (particularly in the UK… or Sweden for that matter). Also, when it comes to long-distance hiking, in the end, two-items-for-one means a lighter pack to carry.

If it was up to us, all trousers would zip off into shorts. We’re talking hiking pants. We’re talking chinos. We’re talking jumpsuits. We’re talking suit trousers. But it’s not up to us (which is probably for the best), and we’re okay with that, as long as it is up to Fjällräven.
