News from The North Face headquarters in Switzerland is that, as of last month, they’ll now be using a much more eco-friendly synthetic insulation in their popular range of Thermoball jackets.
Specially produced by synthetic insulation pioneers PrimaLoft, Thermoball is made up of tiny plastic fibres that, when all bunched up together, have a similar texture and feel to down, as well as very similar insulation properties. It’s been used in loads of The North Face’s products since its conception in 2013, with its warmth-to-weight ratio, durability and ability to provide warmth even when it gets damp making it a popular choice.
Following on from developments made by PrimaLoft, the nylon and polyester for all Thermoball products going forward will be made entirely from plastic bottles, using at least five per product – all diverted from the landfill.
In a recent press release, The North Face revealed that their material production and manufacture has accounted for 60-85% of their total environmental impact (the footprint from any product shipping is all already offset). The decision to shift to recycled materials in their Thermoball range is apparently part of their ongoing efforts to address this.
But it won’t be at a detriment to the price or performance of any Thermoball products, with both aspects, according to the brand, remaining unchanged.
The new ThermoBall Eco comes in six different colours in both adult hoodie and full-zip format. You’ll find it available in The North Face retail stores and on their website.
