Hanwag Tatra GTX Boot | Review

The Tatra GTX is a classic, high-ankled German-style, stiff-soled trekking and hiking boot with impeccable build quality.

‘Characteristic, high-ankled Teutonic, stiff-soled character is softened slightly by the cut-away ankle cuff, but the Tatra is all about reassuring but comfortable solidity and support with a great medium fit’

Outdoors Magic: Solid feel and build quality, great medium last, rolling gait, Vibram sole, reasonable weight, lots of ankle protection and support, different versions available.

Outdoors Tragic: A little heavy and stiffness underfoot won’t suit everyone. Your call.

Outdoors Grabbit? The Tatra’s a modern riff on the classic German-style mountain boot. High ankled, stiff underfoot and made from beautiful waxed nubuck leather. The ankle cuff is soft and supportive though and slants away at the rear so it feels comfortable rather than stuff and restrictive. We can’t fault the build quality and the medium forefoot / snug heel combination works well for us and many others. If you like your hiking boots solid, but comfortable, check it out. There are also wide, narrow and bunion versions in the range.

Hanwag Tatra GTX Boot | Performance

They may look a tad traditional and Germanic, but the Hanwag Tatra turns out to be deceptively comfortable, albeit in a solid, stable underfoot sort of way.

The German outdoor footwear company has a well-established reputation for quality and the Tatra bears that out. The waxed nubuck leather uppers feel reassuringly solid and come complete with reinforced toe and heel areas, although there’s no rand.

The high ankle cuff uses soft, perforated, padded leather and the gentle slant works well to give a supportive but unrestrictive feel. Also neat to use are the ball-bearing, pulley lace-hooks which allows easy and consistent lace tensioning.

We get one really well with the fit of Hanwag boots generally. A medium broad forefoot and a snug but  not overly tight heel works for us and, we suspect, quite a few other people. The Tatra is no exception to that and felt immediately comfortable.

It’s also quite solid underfoot, but a combination of a pronounced curve to the sole and a little bit of flex means it’s comfortable enough walking and happy with broken, turbulent terrain at the same time.

The pay-off for that is that it’s not super light at around 1660g for a pair of size 43s, but then again, the boot should last. There’s no full rand though, so beware extended scree bashing.

One point is that the Tatra is available in numerous versions: wide, narrow, to fit bunions and in men’s and women’s versions. Smaller sizes are available with just two top lace-hooks instead of three. You can also opt for a version without a Gore-Tex lining if you prefer.

Hanwag Tatra GTX Boot | Verdict

Solid underfoot but with plenty of supportive comfort up top pretty much sums up the Tatra – think of it as sort of novella teutonic boot cuisine.

The soft, cut-away ankle cuff keeps things flexible and supportive without restricting movement, but down below the combination of stiff-shanked sole and grippy Vibram toothiness is very much in the traditional mountain walking boot vogue.

Build quality is excellent too – we like those pulley lace-hooks and the quality of the leather – and if the standard medium fit doesn’t work for you, try tracking down the wide, narrow or bunion versions to suit your foot shape.

One for traditionalists who don’t want to endure traditional discomfort at the same time.
