Why We Chose The Keela Munro Salopettes: protective, waterproof, very durable
Founded back in 1989, Keela are a Scottish brand known for creating equipment that can handle some pretty extreme conditions – and this can certainly be said for their Munro range. Designed to take on the inhospitable weather of a typical Scottish winter, the Munro range has quickly become adopted by mountain rescue teams and special forces.
Who Are The Keela Munro Salopettes For?
As expected, the Keela Munro Salopettes are a pair of highly waterproof and windproof trousers that can hack some of the worst conditions out there. From blustery coastal walking to full-on Scottish winter on the Ben, the Keela Munro Salopettes make for a pair of trusty waterproof trousers designed to help you handle the gnarliest of conditions.
Perhaps too warm for summer conditions, these are the kind of trousers that you throw on, along with the Keela Munro Jacket perhaps, and leave them on throughout a full day in some properly brutal weather. They’re not really light enough to be chucked in your backpack, so bear this in mind.
There’s enough space in these to allow you to throw them on over a pair of light trousers, but we’d say the best way to wear them is with just a pair of baselayer leggings underneath.
Features
The first thing to note about Keela’s waterproof kit is, of course, their in-house waterproof and windproof ‘System Dual Protection’ material. First designed and developed for use in military applications, it’s a two-layer shell fabric that features a laminated face fabric to keep water out, and a wicking hydrophobic mesh inner that draws moisture away from the body.
Kind of like how double glazing windows work, this two-layer system results in an air gap that creates a natural thermal barrier which helps to insulate your body (ideal for those Scottish winter conditions). The technology has quickly gone on to be widely adopted by tactical forces and emergency services who require performance clothing that simply won’t fail on them. The Keela SDP tech was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – one of the UK’s most prestigious awards in innovation.
“You’ve got multiple ways to dump heat when things get too hot.”
Aside from the materials, the Keela Munro Trousers are sporting a pretty specced-up feature list to help keep you comfortable in gnarly conditions. This firstly includes a salopette design to help keep snow out of anywhere you don’t want it. You’ve then got mini ankle cuffs, hooks that fasten the trousers onto your boots and a handy zippered chest pocket complete with a storm flap to keep essential items safely kept safe. Thanks to the ample zip venting right up the legs, you’ve got multiple ways to dump heat when things get too hot for the SDP technology.
You’ve also got the option to size these up in either short, regular and long leg lengths with waist sizes ranging from 2XS to 3XL to ensure all body shapes and sizes are covered. The Keela Munro Salopettes come with Keela’s Explorer fit which is, essentially, a generous fit to allow for layering underneath (ideal for winter layering).
