Norwegian brand Helly Hansen is best-known for bombproof gear that would keep you alive in a Scandinavian winter blizzard, whether you’re cross-country skiing, sailing or mountaineering. We’re talking professional grade waterproofs and super-warm insulators, designed for technical activities and extreme environments. But the Oslo-based company also makes everyday kit suitable for the UK’s outdoor scene– and for spring 2021 it has released a new range of mountain footwear pitched at this market.
The new Helly Hansen Gobi APS (all-purpose shoe) and Okapi ATS (all-terrain sneaker) are billed as “versatile trainers made for moving fast over mountain terrain”. Suitable for hillwalking and trail running all-in-one, both trainers feature a whole host of proprietary technology from Helly Hansen. Protection, support and stability come from the HH Lite-Frame upper and the HH Power-Stride midsole. Extra cushioning is provided via the HH Max-Comfort insole, while the HH Max-Grip rubber outsole – which features arrow-shaped lugs and precision tread zones at the toe and heel – promises solid traction over challenging terrain. Non-waterproof versions are “breathable and quick-drying”, according to Helly Hansen, while the waterproof versions – the Gobi APS HT and Okapi ATS HT – have a Helly Tech waterproof membrane to reliably keep your feet dry.
“Versatile, all-terrain trainers fit to withstand all the challenges of a mountain trail.”
Kristofer Eidsgaard, category managing director for footwear at Helly Hansen, tells Outdoors Magic: “We wanted to create versatile, all-terrain trainers fit to withstand all the challenges of a mountain trail. We’re excited to offer lightweight, functional footwear that delivers the highest level of performance and protection while remaining comfortable for long adventures in the mountains – and that’s what we have done with the Gobi APS and Okapi ATS.”
