Inov-8 Stormshell Jacket

The big player of the running world, Inov-8’s latest waterproof shell for running is said to be more breathable and waterproof than any others in the range.

The aptly named Stormshell falls into the 2.5 layer waterproof bracket using a highly breathable 100% Nylon ripstop face fabric. This is certainly not the only fabric in the waterproof jacket world, check out our best waterproof jackets 2016 review to find out more about what’s out there.

The Stromshell is super lightweight at just 150 grams too, so great for packing away on a run, and has taped seams throughout for added protection from the elements.

You’d also expect something so minimal not to have a decent hood, but the roll-away hood including wire peaks is sturdy enough to do a job. Very pricey, but Inov-8 products ooze class and peformance.

Arc’teryx Norvan SL

The term “revolutionary” gets chucked about too much these days, but Arc’teryx’s latest waterproof running shell – the Norvan SL – is just that.

Why is it so special? Well, it uses the world’s first permanent beading technology, which essentially means that however many times the jacket gets wet, it will never lose its waterproofness.

This is the case because it is all just one layer of material – not 2, 2.5 or 3 like many others on the market – with no external textile fabric. The laminate itself is the the waterproof barrier.

It also means there’s very high breathability, which is obviously key when running, and packs away easily while including loads of extra features like the watertight zips. Yes, the price is double the grammage, but it really is something special.

Montane Spine Jacket

Inspired by the Montane Spine Race – Britain’s most brutal ultra marathon – the Spine Jacket is a lightweight waterproof designed to tackle all the elements, but maintaining a high performance.

The 30 Denier Gore-Tex Active Shell fabric is one of the most breathable waterproof layers out there, while the added stitch count on all the seams means more durability after continued use.

It’s heavier than the super lightweight jackets, but it’s designed to be worn for long periods during an endurance event, while the others are better suited to temporary rainstorms.

The British brand has also given it a fitted trail hood so it doesn’t come away from your face and there’s even a roll over beard guard so you don’t get all itchy. overall, a very substantial jacket that has a quality ballance of performancwe and durability.

OMM Ava and Aether Jackets

Designed specifically for both men and women, OMM’s Ava and Aether jackets are full featured mountain running jackets with a 3 layer construction at a minimal weight.

You’d expect a brand that’s famous for its UK trail running events to produce a top quality running jacket, and yes, the OutDoor award winning Ava proves this point.

Using eVent’s new DVStorm 3 layer fabric, the Ava and Aether have very good breathability and waterproofness, while reducing weight on other features like YKK Aquaguard zips and PointZero pocket linings.

Another clever aspect of the jackets are the internal face gaskets, which are a compression system inside the hood that stops the fabric bunching and reducing water runoff. A top running jacket from a team who knows a little bit about mountain running.

Salomon S-LAB Hybrid Jacket

The kings of the alpine trails, the team at Salomon has once again produced a lightweight waterproof running jacket of the highest quality with a serious focus on fit.

It’s only 90g, which is crazy lightweight, but it has a durable, breathable and waterproof Pertex fabric lining, which gives it an edge over rivals in the mountain running world.

But as previously stated, it’s actually the MotionFit patterning enabling complete shoulder, head and neck movement that really makes this jacket stand out.

As its such a small garment, it also has a unique quick stash system which enables the athlete to stuff it into the waistband while running. It’s these small details on top of the overall fabric and fit quality that makes this a quality jacket relative to price.

Gore One Bike Jacket

We’ve chucked in a bit of a curveball here with the inclusion of the One Gore-Tex Active Bike Jacket, which is clearly designed for bike use but can certainly be a running jacket too.

If you’re a cyclist then you probably don’t run too much, but if you’re a triathlete then this may well be the perfect layer for you.
