Berghaus GR20 Storm Jacket | Review

An extremely breathable Gore-Tex Active shell, that's also pleasing on the eye

You don’t have to look at the fine print of the GR20 Storm Jacket to realise why it’s kicking up such a fuss in the outdoor market. Berghaus’s latest top-level release comes with a clear and cut USP – put simply, it’s considered to be the most breathable three-layer Gore-Tex jacket in the world.

This is one of, if not the top option right now for any trail runners or fast hikers out there looking for the latest tech. It comes with the price tag to match that market position at £300 of course, but the features and details are there on the coat to warrant it.

At the heart of the GR20 Storm Jacket is the Berghaus body mapping system which involves vents on the upper torso that allow the jacket to let heat and humidity out without letting water back in. The hand pockets also double as vents.

This clever design in combination with the new face fabric and specially-adapted Gore-Tex Active shell membrane is what ultimately makes it so breathable. You’ll be staying as comfortable (as you can be in a waterproof jacket) throughout your outing no matter whether you’re walking or going at speed.

At 277g the jacket is lightweight as well, and it packs down easily, making it no nuisance at all to take along with you just in case, even if the weather is bright outside. It’s also worth noting that it’s easy on the eye. The GR20 Storm Jacket is a good-looking item, which is by no means the most important thing in the outdoors, but it doesn’t go unnoticed either.

If we get into the nitty gritty details, and the design aspects that are essential on any good coat, the hood has a single point for adjustment, making it easy to sort in any conditions, and the hem of the jacket was made to suit a harness or rucksack.

This is a jacket that makes some other waterproof jackets out there look like bits of Babybel on a cheeseboard. The GR20 Storm Jacket is the seasoned French brie. The finest cut.

It might sound a bit cheesy, but Berghaus have outdone themselves with this one. Sadly it’s only available in a men’s cut at the moment, but fingers crossed they’ll be a women’s release around the corner.
